Red Aro Keepers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wat ure feeding him is FINE but i still love hikari floating sticks for arows...since theres a lower chance of drop eye due to the lower fat content in the balanced diet. good luck!

I think Market Prawn supplemented with pellets (if they will take them) is the way to go.

i feed mine on a diet of market prawns only, cuz i heard its a good source of carotene for the arowana colour development.

Overall market prawn is a fairly poor source for beta carotene, there are far better options available if enhancing the color red is your only goal. Any pure form of astaxathin (synthetic or natural) will give you far better bang for your buck than feeding market prawn. This is very well documented within the aquaculture industry. Astaxathin is the major feed ingredient used in the shrimp farm industry to give the red/pink color to the farms shrimp. Studies have shown that astaxathin also helps with maturation and stock vigour, especially in cramped farm conditions, as it is also very high in antioxidant properties.

For fish raised in aquariums, it is essential to provide carotenoids that the fish would typically find in nature, but IMO there is a fine line between natural color enhancement, and feeding excessive amounts of these substances to enhance the fish beyond what it would naturally achieve on its own.
Some commerical feeds are so high in these substances that they will actually turn a fish that is naturally yellow, orange.

It's all about the genes. Feeding only help little. I have seen reds been fed with bullfrogs, pork, chicken meat and even superworms throughout their life yet very red.

While I agree about genes playing the major role in all fishes adult coloration, in many cases feeding an optimum diet can help more than just a little. Not just in the grooming and/or finishing of a fish, but more importantly, in its overall health & well being. With some fish the difference can be drastic, almost a "night & day" difference, with others, the change may be so subtle that only a very keen eye will see the difference.

BTW stratos, all aros will eat pellets, but as my friend likes to say "the key is you have to be smarter than the fish". :)

Bro, since ur aro stil young, of course u can't keep the colour bright when u light OFF. Dun worry about the colour too much. as long as ur aro is healthy living in suitable environment, i'm sure its bring u more surprise to u in the future. Keeping red aro MUST be patient.
same as humen, if we eat abalone or bird nest every morning, lunch and dinner... wat do u feel? is this good for health? do u feel boring?
Well... we need diet balance every day rite.
so, do worry too much. just feed ur aro with crickets, wheat worm, bullfrog, insects, etc. we make it more choice, it's the way to make ur aro live in well balancing diet and good appetite.
wish u enjoy ur chilli aro ya, Good Luck.

Dam am I the only person in Hawaii without an asian. Anyways like above it depends on your aros genes. You might be feeding all the top foods but your aro might not have much potential.

You live in hawaii, you got reason to complain about anything. :D ;)

Just a FYI ......... the company that sold the vast majority of natural astaxanthin (algae based) to the aquatics industry here in North America (Cyanotech Corp.), stopped production of their Naturose astaxanthin in March of this year. IOW - anything currently being sold that was produced by them is now 6 months old, and even when stored at colder temps according to the companies own info the shelf life is only 1 year from date of manufacture.

Heh, so i guess people like to get the carotene in so that their colors would enhance but i think as long as you switch up the food to a variety of thing then it would be good. Alot of protein is not very good because its fatty food causes cloudy eyes but as i said just give a variety of stuff. If it dont eat it, you tend to have to train them...In some cases starvation... Just my 2 cents.

Hi all
well if it helps i did a case study on giant gourami, the gold ones
i wanted to see if i could make it redder for kicks
so i soaked its pellets with concentrated food colouring, the theory of colours in food absorbing directly from within has been debunked in this case. make no difference.

but i tried three lights...
super white for plant growth
red for shiny bots of the fish, responsible for colours especially reds and blues
and a normal household fluoro bulb

the special red colour bulb highlighted its red 3 times more than any bulb.....
asked my brother who reaserches this stuff, he said that to a small small extent, food ingested will affect scale and skin colour but generally, the colour is digested in the stomach which destroyes colour or comes ut of urine.

so to a small extent itdoes, hence why most fish food in asia has red colouring in it. but generally genes are the key.
