Are red arowanas illegal in the US? I was looking on aquabid and they had reds for sale from places in the US. Are these just traps? Or am I missing something and they are now legal with some kind of papers?

Sorry if this question has been beat to death, but I was not sure.

Thanks and again I apologize for the question.

yes they are illegal aquabid adds some sort of scam most likely

They're scams. And, pretty lucrative and successful scams. They take your money and either send you nothing (to which you have zero avenue to wage complaints since you're trying to buy a federally banned endangered species) or report you to the authorities for attempted smuggling and claim the reward along with your money.

It's a...TRAP? People do sell them here in the US, but they're black market ones that were carefully smuggled. The people who sell, only sell it to people they know they can trust. It's not just as simple as having the money which is astronomical mind you. You gotta know the right people and they gotta know they can sell it to you without something backfiring. They're not going to blatantly post that they're selling for everyone to see. Though I don't blame you for getting your hopes up. I think I can speak for everyone on MFK that if this magnificent fish ever became legal, a good number would hop on that ship. Sadly the ban on this fish has been around since forever and I tell you it might be here for a bit more. No one's really bothering to address the problem at hand. So far all US has really done is stopping the open market on these things. No efforts have been put into checking out if the numbers in the wild are doing good. No one is strictly regulating the farms to release their stock back into the wild. Nothing.

"I don't understand why we still can't buy these fish"
"They're illegal because they're endangered"
"But it's been 40 years? Don't you think they might have bounced back? Aren't there farms helping to breed and release them back into the wild? Is anyone even bothering to check?!"
"Sorry we lack the resources and time to do so, it takes less effort on our part to simply leave it banned"

Is basically what you would get from asking someone at the ESA about the fish.

The DNR's ESA would have nothing to do even if they wished to throw the space program budget at the wild aro population study. The US government has no jurisdiction in the areas the asian aros occur in. It's up to the gov't of the countries where the species occurs to commit to and accomplish the population study. To date, a total of zero agencies have stepped up to take on this responsibility. And, frankly, if the US decided to interceed and fund such a study, I'd be against it. There are far more important things to spend US money on right now in this country than to pump additional money away from the US.
As far as aro farms releasing stock to the wild, ...again, there's no incentive to do so. With no gov't department overseeing wild stocks, it leaves a big "HOW?" to the farms on the procedures for releasing their stock. There is no agency willing to oversee the transportation, accounting, release, and post-release studys of captive stock back to the wild. The farms also have no incentives to release expensive stock to the wild because they, currently, would receive no gov't credits or tax incentives to do so and most of their releases would result in increased poaching which would benefit the poachers with profits lost by the farms.

this is dissapointing never gonna get asian aros in the us

At my LFS there are about 50 silver aro's. They are selling for about $20 each at about 10" long. They also had 4" going for $10. I had no idea these were endangered species! truly magnificent fish!

(before any1 asks I live in the middle east, not the US)
