That's my point, it's temporary. I've never seen a 5 gallon tank in a store holding fish for sale.....never. Most of the system tanks in stores are at least 10-15 gallons, and most of the fish are there for an average of 1 week (with the exception of some of these snooks, that's too expensive for the "average" customer to want to pay). I have never seen 4 4" oscars in a 5 gallon tank.......

My petsmart has about 4 6" snook for sale at $30 each. Nobody bought any of them. So they lowered the price to $15 and blew them out. Same thing with the oscars they have. When the come in the "medium" oscars are $14.99. Nobody bought them until they lowered the price to $7.

The sad thing is that those "temporary" homes usually turn into permanant homes for some of the bigger fish that petsmart sells. Unless of course they lower the prices. I've seen 12 3" oscars in a 10 gallon tank for months at petsmart. I complained to the manager and the next time I went, they had put every oscar in the store in a 55gallon tank. Still too small for 40 oscars even if it is "temporary". A tank like that is a breeding ground for disease. Petsmart should stick with tetras, goldfish and other small fish like that. Leave the cichlids to the real fish stores. Sorry for my rant. That's just how I feel.

P.S. $15 is a good price for a red snook.

What's a real fish store? So many of you have this grand idea of what a fish store should be. For every bad chain store, there is a bad lfs, and visa versa. There have been both here where I live. You have no idea why certain fish are in certain tanks, nor how long they are there. They could have been put there due to a tank problem that had to be fixed. If they were there for a day, no big deal. Sometimes extreme measures have to be taken. I speak from the selling side when I say all you ranters have no idea what goes on on the other side. :irked: Yes, some things go bad, but not as much as the flamers on here like to display. Like I said, there are good and bad of ANY store, you just choose to see only the bad.

Your acting like you are the CEO of Petsmart. :chillpill: All I'm saying is that Petsmart is a "PET" store. They do not specialize in fish, nor do they know all the requirements to keep some of these fish. I'm sure you've read the sign that they have for some of the fish they sell. They are a chain store that is out to make money. They know that if you buy a sick fish from them, and it dies, and you never go back to that store, they don't care because there will be 10 other people right behind you, that will go there to buy fish. You are correct in saying that for every bad chain store there is a bad LFS. However, a good LFS is going to know a lot more about the needs of certain fish over a "PET" store. They are not concerned with the well being of fish. Just how many fish they can get out the door. For you to say that people that have an opinion about the care certain fish recieve in stores are "flamers" is extremely immature. Shows your concern for the animals that you and everyone else on this forum keep and care for. People have certain opinions about the way certain stores keep thier livestock. GET OVER IT!!

I believe you making a blanket statement about whether people who work at a "Pet" store are not concerned or not knowledgeable about the well being of fish in rather immature.

Yes the "pet" store is trying to make money, but so is your lfs!!

Big cooperate pet stores do care about their customers satisfaction. They would not have grown to the size they are now without it. They are well aware of the fact that only 1 out of 5 customers will tell about a positive retail experiance while 9 out of 10 will relay a negative one.
Yes I have been appalled by certain stores, but that is a store to store issue. Overall I have been very impressed with petsmarts that I have been to, and I go to them often.

I'm not acting like a CEO of anything, I'm acting like a person who has been in the business longer than you have probably kept fish, and this is in reference to chains in general, read my post before you quote it. ;) I've been the buyer, and I've been the seller. You need a clue. Seriously. They do care if you come back, that's why some of them have up to a 14 day guarantee! Show me a lfs with that. And I worked with a guy when I first started in PET stores that knew more about fish than most anyone I have met since, so don't give me your "lfs' know more than a chain just because" bs. You need to check your immaturity chart. It's not the opinions that make you a flamer, it's your obvious lack of insight, along with the ripping. And you know NOTHING about me and my animals (or "everyone else on these forums"), so don't even start with your knubby finger pointing. That just shows who's the immature one. When you go into every "pet" store in the world, and every lfs in the world, come back to me with this garbage proof-lacking 100% opinion of yours.

Oscarcrazy, I really couldn't have put it any better, but my fingers were itching. Unfortunately, I'm the type of person that can't stand people talking out of their panties about others with little, to no, knowledge of what they're talking about.

And don't get me wrong, I love my lfs. I do most of my dealing with him. But at the same time, his store has it's downfalls that I personally know have pushed customers away as well.
