Red-Bellied Pirahnas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Domination isn't the problem with piranha, the problem is people think they can keep them in shoebox sized containers and it really messes up the fish. Would you keep 4 kittens in a 30 gal fish tank without letting them out? The fish are going to get that large within a year.

I read though if you raise them together and keep them properly fed that lowers aggression towarda each other and one is less likely to want to dominate over the others.

That's ONLY the case if there's enough room. As they start to grow and enjoy less space because of how rapidly they grow in their first year, they'll start to establish territories. No matter how well feed they are, there's nothing you can do if they become territorial and there's no room for them to swim around (IE, one chases another out of one territority, ends up in another's territories, etc etc...eventually there's not enough room to quickly swim away...or if one becomes ill or weaken in some way it doesn't have the room to get out of the way.

I bet you don't even have 5 months. At growth rate of 1" per month. I give you 4 maybe 5 months at the most before you have problems.30gal isn't that big, unless you have the 33gal(55gal ft print)4-5" fish in a 30gal won't work out so good for someone.

Great! I love these fish! I'm also new to MFK. I have one now probably 5-7 inches long. I've had him for about a year now. Such cool fish to have! I feed him a supplement of Hikari Carnivore Pellets. He loves 'em! Once a week I feed him 10 rosy red feeder minnows. Don't get feeders from walmart, not healthy. Also, no goldfish. I know you see the vids on youtube of the piranhas ripping up some goldfish but goldfish are fatty and don't have much nutrients and protein. I go with the rosy reds. Anyway, I hope you have alotta good years with your RBP's!

Rosey reds aren't any better.
