Red Bellied Piranha

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont feed them gold fish the fish store did, I also read that most parasite meds are toxic to piranha. so I am very leary of using anything like that if I dont have to, Is there some type of behavior they exhibit if they have internal parasites? The belly remains the same fed or not fed, I dont know if it could be carrying eggs, how long would they carry them? It seems like its been quite a while.

Im not feeding them goldfish, they fed them that at the fish store where I purchased them. I feed them frozen foods like prawns, silver fish and kreel, and some algea wafers, they wont eat pellets, I am worried about using any parasite med's as I have read that they are toxic to piranha's, they seem healthy , I just worry that the one with the fat belly could be suffering in any way, thanks

Is praziquental safe for RPB's, should I treat not knowing what it its? what about my other piranha, I dont have a separate tank, is that something I would need? thanks

Ive been keeping RBPs for about 2 months now. I just upgraded from a 55 gallon tank to a 90 gallon tank, i have 9 RBPs so thats 10 gallons per fish. I have a Fluval FX5 and i was wondering about pretty much everything, feeding, filtration, heating, do i need a pump for more oxygen? Anyway pls msg me if you have any info that you think might be helpfull, thanks.......

I feed mine goldfish, crayfish, blood worms, brine shrimp, and occasionally beefheart. I think i feed them too many goldfish. I dont really know anything about parasites, ive only had my fish for 2 months now but they seem to be doing great.......

Well that depends on the meds you use and what's in your tank. If you use pure prazi then you could use the same tank. It's harmless for fish, deadly for worms. Unfortunately most commercially available meds are cocktails of various drugs. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the pharmokinetic action and contraindications of each med in the mix before dosing your main tank. Prazi will not affect your biological cycle. Some antibiotics will.

I Read in a book on piranha, that you should never feed them feeder fish, they carry all kinds of parasites, unless you quaranteen them for a period of time first, and most parasite medicine is toxic to piranha, it said the ones on the outside of the fish need to be removed by hand with tweezers!! yikes! also they are mainly fish flesh eaters, I would only feed beef heart purchased at the fish store, just don over feed or you will have water issues, something else thats good to feed them is prawns just from the store, buy it frozen and thaw it out a couple at a time, mine love it!!:)
