Red Bellies Pacu Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
like is said already, you NEED to take them back, or get one hell of a large tank/pond within a couple months.

take it from me, and i know a good amount about pacu, a 55g is is no way shape or form even 1/10 of what pacu need. once they hit 6-8 inches (which will be within a couple months) they hit a growth spurt where they go from that small 6-8" to 16-18+ within a whole 2 months, maybe 3 at most.

to put it easily, a pacu will be 1/2 as long as that tank, and close to twice the width within a year. so no, a 55g is not suitable.

OP, I am not sure what it's like trying to get rid of large fish in your part of the world, but here, there are few who will take a half-grown Pacu or RTC. More would be willing to take a Silver Aro, but few really have the space. And that's for free; never mind trying to sell them.

You're keeping them for what most would consider the "fun" part -- the time when they can be housed in the average-sized tank. Then, you're planning on turning them out when they grow too large, which you knew would happen, but purchased them anyway.

They, as animals, have no control over anything. You have control over everything, at least when it comes to them, so you've got to excercise that in a responsible fashion.

I know that many fail to make the responsible decision when it comes to these fish; as someone who has a soft spot in her heart for them, and has seen them thrive and become wonderful pets, I hope that you will.

I bought one rbp about two years ago and put him a 20 not knowing his potential. he is now in a 55 by himself and is about 14 inches. i got him at 3 inches. you really big on your tank size

i know you like your new pacus, but you are going to have a hard time getting rid of them once they get bigger-the lfs wont want to take them either. they really shouldnt be selling pacus in fishstores- most ppl have no idea what they are getting into.

id advise you to take them back now, just tell them your tank cracked or something. i love pacus too-but trust me, there are more fish out there better suited for a 55 gallon tank.

BenSnow please get a bigger tank right now. i can see your signature and all the occupants of your 55G are all gonna grow huge, it's either stunt them or upgrade.

Hey guys, I will follow your OPs and get rid of it soon...

Thanks

OP= Original poster. You are the OP.

Did you follow our advise, have you gotten rid of them?

The pics you posted look more like piranha than pacu to me I don't see an adipose fin and my pacu don't have spots on them.
