  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes and they for the most part have to be kept with only there own kind. few ppl have had luck with tankmates for life most end up getting ate sooner or later.

piranha shoal for defensive reasons not for hunting and whoever says redbellies shouldnt be kept singly obivously has never had one .. i have personally seen 13 inch redbellies and terns.. and if you think about what the best way to keep a fish is it would be wrong to cramp them in a 55.. plus if theres only three their hierarchy will be so unstable that there will be constant fighting.. i would never call my advice wrong or weird.. but what you do with your fish isnt exactley what i would do with mine.. how would you feel if you were stuffed in a bathroom with 2 other dudes ?but anyways 3 in a 55 is way to much..

I have to agree with leg89 on this one. I dont think he was calling your advice wrong, but I algree with him and think its kinda weird. He asked a question about RBP's in a 55 gallon tank and you told him to keep 1 in a 75 gallon tank :screwy:

i can stuff you and six of your friends into a closet.. but how happy are you going to be in there? same with the fish.. of course you can fit more then three reds in a 55, WHEN SMALL. Thats why i recommend that he gets 8 small and cull as they get bigger.. Whats wrong with what i said? and in all fairness to the fish, keeping a fish that gets more then 12 inches in an 11.5 inch tank is not right.. i recommended a 75 for its width as in i wouldn't keep them in a 55.. plus the single specimens are always in better condition.. pygos will fight and will nip at each other.. its what they do, so for the good condition and health i recommend single specimen.. unless of course your Joe, he has THE nicest pygos i have ever seen. but thats just what i would do.. you do not have to listen to me or even think that i am right.. but to each his own.

75 gallon is possible, I might try to get one , and I understand that it must suck to be cramped in a small space but I don't think it really a fish can really graspe the situation as well as me and the other people who were trapped in the closet could

also I couldn't keep eight then eventually get rid of them as they get bigger because I would have to big of an emotional attachment at that time :(

get a 75 gallon and throw four or five in there, they'll be plenty happy, if you go with a smaller tank, just stick with a solo fish, i promise he won't be lonely

would a 55g long be as good as a standard 75g?

what are the dimensions of a 55 long? i would guess that it is even less deep than a standard 55

since a standard 55 and standard 75 are both four feet long, the concern that comes along with a 55 is the fact that it is only 12 inches deep, which can be a bit tight for a fully grown adult natt.

what makes you so sure that your fish wouldn't be able to grasp the situation? Put it this way, if you walked by your tank, and every time you did you chased your fish around the tank violently with a net, i would give it about 3 days until they hid when they saw you. which in fact shows that they can learn and even recognize YOU from someone else. If they can show this level of thinking i wouldn't put it past them to have some type of emotions either, such as happiness and sadness, anger, and being comfortable. why do you think it takes such a long time for piranha to come out of there shell? probably because they are scared (which is another emotion) and need to become more familiar and at ease in a particular tank.. with that said, cramping your fish will leave them unhappy and stressed out, bad water quality leads to disease and a whole bunch of other problems... Not showing good colors and sickness are common side effects and your case will be no exception..

Thanks Joe, exactly what i was trying to say

I have absolutely seen 18 inch rbp's maybe even bigger. at the Newport aquarium about a mile south of Cincinnati, ohio. They were at least 18 inches. some were 5 inches wide. I would guess there were thirty to thirth five of them in the tank as well. so to say they don't get 18 inches is just wrong.

the largest recorded size for a natt is 14 inches TL
