im wondering about how fast they grow. i just got a job today at my local fish store and they have a couple and their selling the for practically nothing.

they sell them for practically nothing because theyre so common and because once they get big, nobody wants them. They grow pretty quickly too i think.

Big fish that grow fast, I think you would need a 500g+ tank in a year or 2 just for the pacu, if you have room they are a pretty good deal, large, hardy, easy to keep and feed, and cheap.

I used to work at this pet shop with another guy and we power fed our pacus. They practically doubled in size in a matter of 6 weeks! It was pretty cool. He threw in a pinky (pre-killed) and we watched it get shredded.

Pacu fish grow HUGE! If your LFS is selling black Pacus, these really aren't suitable for home aquariums. Red Belly Pacus, which are what's commonly sold, grow easily (and quickly) to two-feet or more in length.

These are great fish with lots of personality. They grow at least an inch a month, but can be quite faster because they often grow in spurts. Often, you can see obvious growth overnight.

We've got two juveniles that have grown from one-inch fish to seven-inch fish in three months. This amazing growth explains why they're becoming such popular fish in fish farms around the world.

There's a messaging forum devoted to Pacus specifically at http://www.postring.net/pacu/

Hiya zook94, welcome to MFK. Pacus are PRIMARILY veggetarians but not completely, esp. when young. They will happily eat fish and inverts as well as meat.

Pacu easilly will grow an inch ot two a month if fed heavy. The reason they are cheap is most likley because they are very common. Pacu are ok fish but not a good aquarium candidate, they get to big real fast and you can't pay people to take them off your hands once they out grow your aquarium.

If you work in a pet shop, warn the people who are interested in buying one and inform them of your return / trade in policy on big fish so they know what to expect in the future.

When people want to trade in big pacu to me, even for free I wont take them!!!!

I agree that every LFS should tell customers that Pacu and other monster fish will grow big, and tell them how big.

I've read all the posts about Pacu in this forum and I notice a lot of negativity about the fact that these fish grow big. Well, isn't this the Monster Fish forum, and isn't keeping such fish and talking about them sort of the whole point of this forum?

Are cool monster fish only the ones that don't grow big? Maybe this should be called the Monsterlette Fish forum. Eh? ;)
