I think you are misinterpreting the name of this website.

It is not "monsterfishkeepers" as "monsterfish-keepers" but "monster-fishkeepers", as not for "keeping monsterfish" but rather for "monsters keeping fish".

I am sure you do and not because of the pic. It is rather you personality that makes you a suitable member of monsterfishkeepers.com.

what!!!! well heck im one who misinterpret the name.....i really thought it was Monsterfish-keepers.

but back to the subject. it is the size that attracted me to this monster size fish. :grinyes:

:D

It is not that pacus get big that is the problem, it is that they grow quickly and are often sold to unsuspecting customers as gentle little piranha look alikes to put in their 55g community tank.
I am not fond of them because they eat up the plants and seem to produce more their own body weight in poop every day, there are other fish I would use the space for.
I also don't care for blood parrots, oscars, or flowerhorns but that is just a matter of personal taste. Not everybody likes eels but I love them.
As long as you know what you are getting there is nothing wrong with pacu, if I had the SA greenhouse pond I dream of it would definitely contain a few redbelly pacu.

I completely agree with you. Probably hundreds of Pacu are killed every year because unsuspecting members of the fish-buying public buy these cute little one-inch fish at their LFS for their 10-gallon aquarium at home.

Unfortunately, it's quite common to find LFS employees who know nothing about fiskkeeping, or about the fish they're selling. Even worse when LFS employees or owners know what they're selling (as in the case of monster fish like Pacu) and don't tell their customers how big these fish get.

Part of the responsibility goes to the public, as well, IMO. I try to never buy a fish until I do some research on it. With the Internet, it's really not hard to take a few minutes and find out if a fish is suitable for our tanks at home.

A SCHOOL of Pacu as DITHERS??!!!!! Ohmygawd, that that guy out back and shoot him. Please. :wall:

Can people be that COMPLETELY clueless? How does he know about dithers? That tells me he knows something about fishkeeping, which makes his statement about a school (I still can't get over that) of Pacu being used as dithers even worse.

I hope you used the opportunity to educate this guy a little.

AMEN DUDE Pacu are cool, and their huge appetites and monster size is a big part of why.

Ive been keeping track on my red belly. He went from 4 to 10 inches in 8 weeks. That's speedy. And he definitely eats meat--shrimp, worms, chopped anchovies, and mealworms as well as algae pellets, krill, lettuce, grapes, and just about anything else. He's awesome, and is going into a 1000 gallon indoor pond as soon as I get it up and running. Pacus rock!
