Red Cherry Shrimp...Anything I should know?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With 20 shrimp in a well-cycled tank, I would recommend feeding much less than once a day unless you monitor exactly where the food goes and vacuum it up shortly after. For instance, I have a colony of ~80 in a 20L. I feed about the equivalent of two algae tablets a week, and have a bristlenose pleco in the tank to clean up the leftovers.

Cherry shrimp are hardy, but can sometimes be very fickle when it comes to breeding.

I have about 200 in a 40g with 2 cory cats and a couple dozen bristle nose plecos (also breeding). I feed pinch (1/4 teaspoon) of flake food and about 8 half green beans from a can (crushed in my hand to break them up. I also have 10-20 mystery snails and a ton of ditch snails (not Malaysian). The plant I selected is from my local water way, a noxious weed that grows out of control. Before I feed, I always see the shrimp eating something off the plant.

Oh, measure the ph in the water when the shrimp arrive and the ph in your tank. The bigger the difference in ph, the slower you should acclimate.
