How do you keep baby shrimp? It seems like they would be microscopic.

Personally, i started using a special baby shrimp food, which is also suitable for the adults... its basically a powder, so as it settles in the carpeting plants, it gives the shrimp something to constantly to forage for...

JeffT123 JeffT123 this is my first attempt at a shrimp tank, my first female is buried now. I am hoping the shrimplets will be able to survive in the moss. I will keep this thread updated.

The moss will definitely help, although if the tank is still very new, it may not have enough algae and other foods for the babies, but as said just see how you go...

Here's an updated picture of the tank, I'm super excited about me first buried female.

Judging by the latest pic, it seems you do have some algae growth going in the tank, so that again will definitely help provide some extra food for your young shrimp to forage on...

I believe this is my first buried female. Can anyone confirm? Also, anyone have any idea what grade she might be?

^ Hard to tell from that pic... since you cant actually see the berries formed underneath yet... But normally once berried up to a certain point, you will see approximately 20 ish yellow eggs under her belly, and she will use her back legs to fan them...

As for grading; these shrimp aren't like Crystal Red Shrimp where you can really grade them based on colors / pattern / and their translucency , these shrimp in theory should all come out pretty much the same color as the parents...

Also, one other thing, once you do notice your females start to berry up, try not to disturb them too much by messing with the scape etc, since if you freak them out by accident, they can and do sometimes drop their eggs...

I was referring to the female in the picture. I believe she is decent quality, but Im just getting into shrimp...

^ as far as fire red shrimp go, her color is about as solid as they come...

I guess if you really want to rate their quality, one method people over here used to use on CRS was to get a flash light or something and see if their shrimps shells were translucent...

Since in the CRS world, other than pattern, it also comes down to how solid the colors are...

And i can tell you i've personally seen CRS in tanks that looked fake coz their shells and colors were so solid and vibrant.. It looked like they were made out of acrylic...

Really cool tank, I'd love to try something like this soon too; hope you get a healthy batch of babies!

^ Convict, you should try it, a 5 - 10G tank, sponge filter, some soil + moss and maybe a piece of driftwood and you are good to go for most basic setups...
