Red Coloration Foods?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When it comes to the enhancement of the color red, Krill and BW's are no comparison to a food that has high levels of astaxanthin in it.

Agreed, I feed them as treats to offer some variety. They have some enhancement value but they don't begin to take the place of high quality staple foods.

NLS ultra red and hikari blood parrot red works wonders with me accompanied by krill and raw shrimp once in a while. I know theres powders out there to be mixed with your staple food but its not for the faint hearted ones. They used in on competition for flowerhorn to make the flowerhorn more red and stunning.

The powders used are Carophyll Pink, and Carophyll Red. Synthetic color enhancing agents derived from petroleum by-products. Below is a long read on those substances from a past discussion in 2010.

The pics are gone now, but what the OP showed was some rather lack luster looking light pink discus, that were jacked up on a high level of Carophyll Pink. IMO if your fish require that level of synthetic color enhancement, you should probably just buy better quality fish with better genetics.

I ordered the Hikari Blood Red Parrot.

I'm not going to go that crazy & try to add color. Just trying to make their natural colors shine and not be hindered from what they eat. If I can add some extra color boosters in food that is good for them then that's a plus.

I have used a number of the more specialty foods designed to enhance the color red, and would place NLS Ultra Red and Hikari Blood Red Parrot plus at the top of the heap.

If you have to choose one between the two for flowerhorn, which one would it be, NLS Ultra Red or Hikari Blood Red Parrot plus?

Just compare the ingredient list -- even as a Hikari BRP+ user I can easily say NLS is quite superior, esp. with regards to fillers, which all Hikari use too much of.

Thank you. I couldn't find a store that sells any. Online I couldn't find details of NLS. So tried here. Ordered the NLS.

But both will work for FH....

Thank you, going with NLS.
