I havent said anything to anyone about this, but I've removed the divider between my RD and a female Sev.
They get along well, male has displayed through the divider over the last few weeks, and female seems receptive.

Question is: What is the likleyhood of them hybridizing?

Male RD 14.5''
Female Sev 6''

cheers

not really aiming for anything Im thinking of a hybrid in my head.
Like RD x Sev
the RDxSev x Syn
then RDxSevxSyn X Jaguar.

might sound unrealistic, but Id like to see what i get, if not nothing.

Its not possible for any Heros species to breed outside of the genus

is that for cirtain mate?
how are blood parrots made?
i dont want to sound ignorant, just another question.

There is no obvious Heros blood in a parrot, the fish they call gold severum in asia is not a heros efaciatus but a hybrid between Vieja Syns and Amph. Labiatus cross with a Midas.

There has never been a account of Successful fry between a Heros species and any other species of fish, even most hybrid attempts between Heros Sp. Rotkeil and Heros Efaciatus are extemley unsuccessful.

Blood parrots took many years of line breeding to create. They are not as simple as just crossing 2 species.
There is certainly a slim chance of viable fry, Its unlikely but possible, Keep an eye on the female sev because the RD could get nasty with her.

Glenbo- Where did you get this information? Im almost positive parrots and red sevs have Heros in the bloodline at some point. Sevs can breed with each other, but dont usually due to different breeding habits.

Have a look at this thread that i started http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347825

There is no obvious Heros in Parrot, they act and look nothing like them :S and to add to the fact far removed Amazon fish can not breed with their central American ancestors, the same as you cannot cross a african cichlid with anything from the new world.

Trust me i have been into to hybrids for years, and i am currently breeding Severums and Flowerhorns in the same tank!! I have never been able to, nor seen nor has anybody else a Heros x other species hybrid.

This forum would of definitely had one by now because the hybrid community here is very active.

Yeah I do have to agree, There is no records of any severum hybrids. The mouth shape and head of Parrots resemble Heros, But that could just be a disirable mutation from whatever was used to create it. In the same way the flowerhorns got the kok. Thats the main reason the "legend of bp's" say midas x sev. I dont think the secret will be revealed anytime soon, until dna testing all we have is theories.

I do have to disagree that gold/red severums have no hero in the bloodline. Physical characteristics are identical, as well as behavior and temperament. Even down to the facial worming in males. I dont know about sevs in asia, I have a hard time believing a gold/red sev came from only syns labs and midas.

I never said Gold/Red Sevs have no Heros :S thye are both Heros Efaciatus line bred mutts, not hybrids at all.

I wasj ust talking about Blood Parrots and the Taiwan false Gold Severums, which are unrelated to the fish we know s Gold Severums....same as there is the Parrot fish from Taiwan and the true Parrot, they just stole the name because they name things in very basic ways over there..... ie if it the hybrid they have made looks like a coin shape, they call it lucky coin, if the hybrid they make looks like a severum, they steal that name also.

On another note, if you look at the face of these species: Convict, Sajica, Nicaguensis, Vieja complex, you will see they all have rounded off very Severum like faces, that is probably where that came from.

So to sum it up and to finish rambling... :P

No you cannot breed a Heros to any central American cichlid.

I think they shoudl reclassify South American and African cichlids to something else now anyway, the true Cichlasomas from CA could keep the name, the rest need a seperate branch on the evolution tree much like the salt water Damsel Fish, Dottybacks and Clown Fish etc.
