as you can see in my sig, my devil is in my 250 with pacu, dempseys and a tiger oscar.

im in the process of cleaning the tank right now, and the devil is biting the living daylights out of me for the first time ever (not the most exciting thing ive had done to me today)

i noticed 1/2 of his/her 12" flower pot is covered in white eggs. which, if any of these tank mates could it have bred with??? hoping something comes of it, the devil is quite nice looking. completely white with only red around the eyes.

devil/pacu...that would be one strange fish if it were possible:WHOA:

yeah.... it wasn't the pacu. most likely a dempsey. also a possibility, if the RD is female, it may have layed eggs just because it was full of 'em.

Female rds will lay eggs all by themselves quite commonly. If the eggs are white they are fungused and not viable.

CANCEL THAT!!!!

theres a bunch of little tiny clear things in the pot, look like 1/8 of an inch maybe all moving above the eggs. im guessing these are the hatchlings??

pardon my stupidness. never had eggs make it to hatching before. always got eaten by a cat or plec. this is the first time i dont have plecs or a cat in a tank.

a red devil and a dempsey. interesting.........

Nice! The left over white eggs are dead, so don't worry about them. Sounds like you have wrigglers in the pot. Is the devil guarding the pot alone? Can you get pics of the fish?

yep, devils guarding the pot alone. wont let ANYTHING on HER half of the 7 foot tank. she's confining an 18" pacu, 3 8" pacu, a 10" oscar and a bunch of dempseys 3-6" to one side.

i noticed everytime a fry gets out of the pot, she grabs them in her mouth and appears to bring them back to the pot. this is normal behavior, and not eating them im guessing?

anyone have pics of a devil/JD or a devil/oscar?? since i have no way of knowing yet which it was. nor did i once notice anything remotely near breeding behavior in that tank

well, you've narrowed it down for me :D

hoping she can defend them long enough to be free swimming, and i can transfer them over to a 10g to grow some.:popcorn::popcorn:

Yes she is guarding them. I have never cross-bred JDs or oscars myself, or seen it myself. You can be sure it was not the pacu. If what you are telling us is (and I'm not calling you out) true it's between the jd and oscar. Leading up to this you never saw any per-spawn activity/courtship/fighting? Anything? Any other fish recently removed?
