Red Devil compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 and they started at different times together or added....

Now they all are in separate tanks :nilly:

I have 1 about 6-7" and it beat up a 11" Clown knife !

Also both my biggest RDs torment my plecos and
I have a big Pleco 13" that the Rds will grab/bite the fins of the pleco
and drag it around !!!!!!!!
This is a huge pleco !

I now have 1 tank with knife and large pleco.
2 tanks with the Rds alone.

The third is still young and is in with other fish.FOR NOW !

my other fish had to be moved to other tanks also :nilly:

Slim to none. If you do get lucky and the RD doesn't kill the Oscar, you will still need a larger tank to house them as adults. My RD is about 4.5" in his own 75. He already attacks his reflection in the glass...violently. He had a few Red Eye Tetras with him until he took them all out in a matter of three days. I hope your RD plays nice and is able to live with the others though.

did you read the responses above the post you made on this thread?

theres pretty much 0 chance of taking a 9 inch RD and putting him with other fish...especially in a tank that is already too small for the fish you currently have before adding the RD.

Would a Red Devil be compatible with a

Salvini
Jack Dempsey
Oscar
Firemouth

I've had red devil's with all African cichlids grew to ten inches very calm fish. Then I had one that from the start didn't like any fish in the tank with him he killed alot of fish so I had to get rid of him. I also had two red devil's with many other and they did well. It just depends on the fish. You will be able to tell early if he's a killer.

Not really true. I have heard of sweet timid RD’s murdering everything, out of nowhere, after a year or more of peaceful coexistence. I’ve read about literally hundreds of fish mortalities caused by this species and I quickly lost interest in trying mixed communities with RDs, especially in moderately sized tanks. In a 600 gallon with the right variety and placement of cover one might be able to do all of them except the Oscar, and maybe even him too. But I would not want that, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

i would say no. ive heard stories of RDs that get along well with others but never seen such a thing. my RD switches between psycho killer and calculating assassin. only thing he can cohabitate with is a raphael cat.

11 year old thread.. But to help out, youll find that 99% of amph. End up needing solitary confinement. They are a handfull. And generally far more agressive then parachromis. Parachromis tend to pick a spot and will beat on fish if intruded on. Amphs will go out of their way to pick fights generally ime.

I agree Amphs seem to be more belligerent all the time while parachromis seem more calculating. You could try to add one to that mix but odds are it will go south eventually. Who knows though?
