Red Devil eye color

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
FYI - his fish is pure labiatus (F1), not a midevil.

Not wanting to rain on anybody's parade ( being myself a big fan of the Amphilophus complex ) why the certainty??

I have a fish which looks exactlyh like this one, I would say that perhaps with a tad more lip, even, and I cannot be sure if it is pure or Mid-Devil.

Do you know the origins of this ( beautifull ) fish?

Parents are proven wild caught. Like any other f1 cichlid out there. The dad is a beast 12"er with huge lips. Got him from a very reputable breeder in my area and have seen the father many times. Mom was killed post spawn.

..... and there you have it, Miguel. Just another prime example as to how one cannot simply view a pic of a fish, and determine its genetics.

I did not try to determine, RD. I merely asked, interested in this discussion that I am, about the certainty of the proferred statement.

Since parents are known, no doubts should linger, obviously.

Curiously, my "Labiatus" ( whose origins I shall never be able to determine ) looks a lot like that one, as said with more lip, even, and I simply do not believe that i would find a true Red Devil in Portugal's 2nd hand market.

I will try to post a picture, since we are at it....

Just checked the father. What an impressive fish. What a marvel.

this one being an offspring of his, I rest my case.

One thing that I have noticed over the years is that quite often white/orange "creamsicle" amphilophus morphs seem to have partial or entirely crystal blue eyes, such as in Fishman's lab. I'm currently growing out some cits where the father was a creamsicle & those offspring showing this same color pattern also have crystal blue eyes. The rest all have darker black/orange eyes.

Beautiful specimen. Thanks for sharing. I generally assume that unless the fish is from a reputable source, that the possibility of hybrid must be considered. I wonder if fishkeeping will ever go the way of the AKC?

Heres my male. His eyes have a lot of blue
