I have an 8 inch red devil that currently gets about four tetramin jumbo carnivore pellets a day. I supplement this with frozen blood worms and freeze dried krill a couple times a week. with the krill i'll just give him a couple big pieces (about the size of the pellets he eats) and for the bloodworms i use the fish gumdrops brand and i just feed him one cube. His growth rate has slowed a little, but i hear this is normal after the first 7 or 8 inches, and his color is awesome. I know he is very healthy, i just want to make sure he will reach his full potential, as he really is a beauty....any suggestions? am i feeding enough?

They don't have to be fat to be getting enough. Sonds like you are doing a good job. If he is in a big tank and you do regular water changes it sounds like he should reach his full potensial in no time.

The feeding regiment you've got him on is certainly decent...but you might want to consider changing his pellets to Hikari Gold or Biogold. Awesome foods that do an excellent job of naturally bringing the reds/oranges out of fish. Plus, it must taste great, becaue I've never found a fish that wouldn't eat it.

Thats a good point, my fish love hikari cichlid bio gold and cichlid gold.

I use a mixture of pellets that usually includes those from kensfish.com, goldfish/koi pelllets and hikari gold. the more you can mix up the diet the better but it sounds like you're doing a good job with him. you're right that red devil growth will slow down once they hit around 6-8" so don't expect to see an inch per month out of him anymore. he should continue to grow though at a slower yet steady pace provided you continue to keep the water in excellent shape and feed him as you have been. you can never do too many water changes though so just something to keep in mind. well, you can but it'd be very hard to do. :D

sounds like you are doing a great job. I have 2 RD's of different sizes and they both eat whatever hits the water. I feed approx 10 different foods including live blackworms, meal worms and crickets. a varied diet with regular water changes will definitely bring your fish to his full potential. Hwo about a pic? Best of luck!

thanks for the help guys! I will definitely try the hikari gold, and i hadn't thought of crickets and mealworms but i'll give those a try too. i forgot to mention i also give him earthworms every now and then. as far as water changes i replace about a third of the water once a week. between him and the pleco i have in with him they make quite a mess. i definitely notice his colors intensifying with the water changes. will definitely have some pics in the near future. thanks again
