as far as i can tell yes. and the lfs asked her supplier and he said they are. either way it sounds like i need to redo my thinking here as apparently a 75 gal has very little stocking availability unless i want to keep 1 or 2 fish in there..

75g used to seem like a big tank to me too...and it is if you're keeping mollies or tetras. I was really disappointed when I first found out it would only hold a single glassbanging cichlid. GL

so apparently im gonna be selling off my 3 tanks and buying/building 1 giant one for all these jerk fish.. i just dont really understand why a 13" max size fish (oscar) should be by himself in a 48"x18" footprint tank.. my lfs has always told me that a minimum tank for 1 oscar is 55 and for 2 is a 90 that has the same footprint as my tank. she also told me that a 55 is fine for a single RD and that as long as the fish get along the 75 would be fine for the sev pair/oscar.

i guess you learn somethimg new every day

The thing is not only do oscars get big, but they also produce HUGE amounts of waste. Much more than one would expect a fish that size to produce. They are also very messy in just about everything they do, which adds to the bioload. In other words, oscars dirty up the water much faster than most other fish, hence why they need larger tanks. And I'm not sure why the woman at your lfs would say that, considering a full grown male RD can get to 12", and the width of a standard 55 gallon is 12 3/4". Doesn't seem like a lot of turning room if you ask me...

understood. now if i have enough filtration and the individual fish get along an oscar with the severum pair in the 75 would be plausable? and i think i might go to some sort of cichlid i can do a breeding pair of in my 55 gallon but for now my RD's are going in there to grow out until i get them a bigger tank or rehome them. whats a good idea of fish i can put in a 55 gallon tank as a pair? SA/CA only

Sev's would be fine in the 55g indefinently.;)

sev's get to 8" so that would seem fine for a 12.75" wide tank. unless your 55g is the 48x18x17 in which case your red devil might be okay in it. the shorter 55's are better for cichlids as they don't care so much for the height.

at any rate putting your sevs in the 55g alone and the oscar in the 75 would probabally work the best. then you could always figure out other accomidations for the red devil. where are you located?

in AZ there are two different refurb guys, one has a 100g tank for 90$, the other has a 100g tank for 75$. check your local craigslist.

im on craigslist constantly but threre usually arent deals like that on my local craigslist. hell the biggest tank any of my LFS or anyone else around me stocks is 55 gal. i gotta drive 30 mins away to be able to buy bigger and its at ridiculous prices.. i.e. 2500 for a 150 drilled tank with oak stand and canopy.. no filtration or anything.. i put the rd in the 55 to grow out while i try to scrounge up money for another 75 or bigger..
