red devil in a mbuna tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dont keep your luck up so high, my friend had a red devil in a 125g and it was a 6 inch red devil female, lots of hiding spots ofcourse the little africans were 2-3 inches. Day after day one african cichlid was beat up or chewed in half.

i kept an RD(3" grew to 8") and a bumblebee cichlid(2"grew to 5") together in a 75g for quite a while and were fine together up until the day i gave them away before i had to move. i did try to add a JD sometime in between and the RD beat him up pretty bad and so i had to remove the JD.

If the RD was a juvenile and smaller then the Africans i would say you would not have a problem as it would grow up with the other fish and not see them as prey.

But your's is an adult, i don't think it would be the best idea to stick it in there right now, especially as mbuna don't really get all that big and the RD would go straight to work establishing who's boss.

can some one give me some advice please, ive just acquired a 8-9 inch red devil got it on its own at the mo! in my proper tank (100 gal) I have one 6-7 inch tiger oscar, 7 inch pleco an a 6 inch talking cat fish. was told it was a severum but knew soon as i saw it what it was! what do you think my chances are of putting it in my main tank!? thank you an would be grateful for any advice

Depends on the temperament of the cichlids. Add cover for the catfish and they should be fine. The red devil may very well wind up beating up the oscar sooner or later though. Adding other fish to disperse aggression sometimes works but space becomes a big issue. Good luck to you!

Give it a try and see what happens. I know Mbunas are fast. The RD might chase but with small rocky hiding spots most lkely wont get to them.

okay, he is in my tank. been there three days so far and is doing well.... let me see if i can get his pic on here.
