I just had a tragedy happen this week. I have (had) a 75 gallon with 2 Jacks, 1 red devil and a big RBP, the jacks where male and female and paired off while the red devil stayed on his side of the tank in fear of the big male jack, but tank was very peaceful for aggressive fish. Well, after staying away for the weekend i returned home to find my tank cracked and the water leaking everywhere(fricken pacu). I had a spare 50 gallon in my basement so I set that up and moved the 2 jacks and red devil to it and all was well, went to bed. Woke up to find my girl jack dead, fins/scales stripped by the red devil, i was shocked and pretty upset as i really like (liked) my jacks. My red devil is only about an inch smaller than big guy (male jack he's about 8.5-9") and is overly submissive around him (swimming nearly verticle with its head down) big guy now activly goes after him(it) now that his girl is dead and i thought it was purely a revenge fight. But today friday I wake to find them swimming playfully and peacefully together and sharing the cave. SO i do some reseach on identifying female red devils and i realize he is a she. So I have a female red devil (yellow with black eyes named banana) and a male jack who seemed to have paired. What is the likelyhood they will breed now that they are alone in the tank with no distractions? Also i've tried looking for photos of what the hybrid would look like and cannot find a jack/devil hybrid, if you can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it.

Pacu's don't belong in a 75, but I guess you just learned that.

i had pacus....... and demseys...... i had to rehome the pacus

Guys, I'm aware that its not big enough, I didnt address that because it didnt have much to do with my question. But to address that , I rescued the pacu from my nephew who bought him and had it in a 10gallon tank, it had not yet outgrew my tank (it was 14 inches) and I was looking for a home for him but nobody wanted him and i wasnt going to kill him. I'm actually pretty upset he died because he had an awesome personality for a fish. Now does anyone know if my jack and devil can breed and if so, do you know of a link where i can see the hybrid?

Wow, you can't make this stuff up. Your fish outgrew the tank. I really don't think there could be any more proof than the simple fact that it broke the tank from the inside. And despite the evidence being so incredibly obvious you are still naive enough to say "It had not yet owutgrown my tank."

Even if it had been the only fish in the tank, the tank was grossly over stocked. No matter how hard you deny it. And now you want to play God and hybridize and cross breed species.

Good luck to you. Personally I don't think you are demonstrating "responsible" husbandry" in either situation. But that is just my opinion.

Your really cool, I wish I was as knowledgeable about things as you are. I cant wait till the day I am so well accomplished in life that I have nothing better to do than be an ass to random people on the net because I am perfect. Man, I am so jealous of you. 75long was holding it fine, at 4x the length of the fish and alot more that the 1 gallon per inch rule I was told at the petstore, i was not acting without merritt. Plus I said I was looking to get rid of the fish, they are known as tank breakers or at least its what my local petstore (where i tried to give him away to) guy told me no matter what tank they are in, which it didnt break my tanks glass i think it broke a silicone seam. Sorry if I am not an expert like you and can only go off of what I'm told by people I assume are experts. And if you know how to read, you will see I am not intentionally trying to hybrid them, not that I have anything against it, but I was asking a question. Grow the hell up and get a life, way to keep people away from this forum and receiveing help from people that ARE experts! Enjoy your perfect existance!

A 14" fish would need a tank (according to YOUR Math equation) of 56" long. A 75 gallon tank is only 48" long. Perhaps the pacu had out grown the tank after all. For that matter the red devil will out grow the tank as well, they get to be 16-18" long.

The 1" per gallon rumor is something you really should read up on. If it is to believed, a 10" oscar will be just fine in a 10 gallon tank.

A red devil and a jack dempsy are not very closely related. I really don't think they can hybridize but stranger things have happened.

Your temper tantrum is not needed. Nor will having one encourage people to help you. You are already demonstrating poor fish keeping practices, something we can help you with, but to couple that with a ranting fit at the people helping you isn't going to win you any popularity contests.

A Red Devil and a Jack Dempsey certainly are closely related species. In fact all CA cichlids (along with SA cichlids such as Austroloheros species, Caquetaia species and a few exCichlasoma species), are closely related. They are all considered to belong to the subfamily Heroine. Amongst CA Heroine there are 2 divisions (Tribes): the Amphilophines (Amphilophus, Parachromis, Archoecentrus, Cryptoherus, Amatitlania (cons) , Rocio (JD), amongst others) and the Herichthines ( Herichthys, Veija, Paratheraps, Chuco, Theraps, Paraneetroplus, Thorichthys ect.). The island cichlids ( Nandopsis) might represent a 3rd grouping as it is unclear yet, which of the 2 groups they are most genetically similar to.

Seeing that all sorts of crossess between Amphilophines and Herichthines are possible, no reason to supose that a crossing of 2 Amphilophines (JD and RD) wouldn't produce viable offspring, as they should be even more genetically similar.

Now, that they could cross, doesn't nessarily mean the 2 species are inclined to do so. I have never actually seen or heard of a JD X RD cross, though the number of years the fish have been kept in the hobby together, I would think, somewhere, at some time, someone has crossed the 2.

If you have the time, space and money, go for it. And I wouldn't call hybridization playing god at all. If the fish dont want too interbreed they won't and the genetics are paired together by god. He created the hybrid he makes every cell in hybrids and to the people who say scientists made a cell out of "nothing", It came from molecules god made. I know I probably made some errors. I could go on and on but I dont want to bore you:) O yea I really just want to say one more thing, God put animals on Earth for our use. Ok now Im done

If they have become a pair, and are starting to go through the motions, then it's really just a matter of time before they breed. As far as I know, ANY CA cichlid could be crossed with another CA cichlid. And I have yet to hear of such a cross that could not produce viable offspring.

Given the number of species in Central America, there are many, many possible crosses. Many of the crossess that have happenned over the years are not documented or pictured on the internet. Almost 30 years ago, my brother crossed male JD with female mayan (exCichlasoma urophthalmus). He didn't like the offspring so he gave them to me, but I didn't like them either, so I ended up using them as feeders. As far as I know, no pictures of a JD X mayan cross exists on the internet, but I know for a fact, such cross is possible. Like a JD x RD cross, it's a cross of two Amphilophines, so it would be even more suprising if such a cross wouldn't produce fry. Around the very same time, I crossed male Texas with female mayan, but also used these fry as feeders ----again another cross that I have never seen a picture of on the internet, but know that it produces fry, just like any other CA X CA cross.

On this forum, I seen a picture from an ACA file, taken long ago, that shows a Veija paired with a "Geophagus" brasilliensis and their batch of fry. True, a "G". brasilliensis is, in all likelyhood, much more closely related to CA Heroine then it is to a true Geophagus, but still, probably more distantly related then a CA cichlid would be to another CA cichlid. Given that this cross is possible ( though we don't really know if the fry are sterile or not?), I find it hard to beleive that ANY CA X CA cross couldn't be possible.
