  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It has been documented for some time. The Midas complex has been reasearched and studyed intensivly. We are not making this up as we go.

Cool. Thanks for the link. I still think it's funny how people will post a pic and ask a question, then it turns into whether it is a Midas or a RD. But, that was actually what this thread was about, so that's my bad.

I think the OP's is a devil myself. Whether it is male or female, vent it to find out.

its a nice fish i still call my fish a red devil either way i like calling it a red devil LOL, but still beautiful fish

Did you even bother to read any of this, or are you just wanting someone to agree with whatever you decide?

Nuchal Humps are not sure ways of indicating sex of RD/Midas. Females can also have them. No way of telling if your fish is Midas or Red Devil or what sex it is by a pic (unless it is a clear vent pic). Venting will tell you the sex though. If you purchase from a reliable source like a reputable hobbyist or vendor, you will have a more concrete background of your fish. The fish in question does look nice. Give it plenty of room, quality food, and regular water changes and it will continue to improve.

A. labiatum is typically going to be a proportionally longer fish than it is tall. Red devils are a more stream-lined fish that doesn't quite attain the bulk that a Midas does. The lips, when viewed from above, are going to be more of a V-shape and the snout is a little longer than a midas. Wild fish typically have enlarged lips due to their specialized feeding habits. This usually goes away in captivity.

Is why I figured red devil from all the examining I've done, sorry I just wanted to be re-assured which fish I had, I didn't want to mis-label it on a sale or something, guess I'll just have to consider it Midevil.

The whole point of this exercise, is that unless you have some kind of provenance with your devil/midas, then the only safe, and more importantly, responsible thing to do (especially if you ever plan on breeding or selling your fish) .......... is to consider it a hybrid, commonly referred to on this forum as a Midevil.

It doesn't matter what the shape of it's head, mouth, body, or anythng else is. A. labiatus & A. citrinellus have been cross bred to the enth degree, starting decades ago before most of you gents were even born.

There are probably millions of devil/midas crosses in the hobby at this point, some look more labiatus, some look more citrinellus, but they are all hybrid crosses.

Is any of this sinking in yet?
