red devil or red devil x parrot???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a low grade/low quality BP without the typical deformities. I've seen a lot of these pop up over the last year it chain stores like Petco, Petsmart, etc. I'd grow it out and see what you get. It may end up looking pretty cool once it hits 8-10" (if it does).

SO thinks it's a short body RD. I haven't looked into his claim as I see parrot in the fish. I don't know the fish's origin prior the small LFS he got it from.

Short body RD? That would still be a hybrid. and if it is a pure RD then its a horrible thing to do to such a nice fish.

But look at its mouth. It has the classic triangle shape that is one of the characteristics of a BP. Pull up some images of the face of a BP and look at the mouth... Happens due to screwed up genes from hybridization. Only other way would be to break the fishes jaw...

So it either a BP or an RD that has been hurt enough (broken mouth, curved spine) that you should put it down anyways.

Manu....I think you might be right it's just a BP lacking the extreme deformities. Which is perfectly fine for me.

SO leans too hard on trying to ID fish just on body color, eye color, and leaving little room for facial characteristics and body shape.

There certainly is a learning curve when buying mislabeled fish.

How does one label a fish like an RD on eye and body color when there is such a huge amount of variation in the species? Body shape, head shape, mouth, and attitude are more reliable... And even then...

Logibear, SO uses YouTube to learn about the fish. There is a video he came across with shortbody RD in the title. I'm more of a googler to learn more about them.

I know....me and him occasionally see different eye color on the same fish!

People do the same thing in the chicken keeping world. They focus only on the feather color but do not take into consideration of comb type, tail shape, whether it has feathered legs or not, etc when there is an ID my bird I bought at the auction question.

LOL....I'm loving the smile references....still sweet justice in my opinion. I still got a BP after all of SO's foot stomping that one would never be in the tank and he's the one that proudly put it in.
