Thanks for the response bro. This is probably the best advice so far! Although I doubt he has internal parasites, its definitely cant hurt to treat for it. I always do 50% water changes every friday.

I used to be able to pet my female a few years back, but ever since I put in the ornament Pirahna, he's turned into a Jeckle and Hyde! I literally have to use the net to keep him at bay during the water changes. And even then, He's bit me twice. :naughty:

Heres a video I took from just this past Halloween:

I'm gonna disagree with what I put in bold and I'll tell you why. I'm not a fan of using any more chemicals than absolutely necessary and most of the time I never use anything other than dechlorinator. even if I have a sick fish I try to figure out what's wrong and treat without using chemicals when at all possible. chances are if a fish is sick then it is under stress because a healthy, non-stressed fish will usually have a strong enough immune system to fend off any type of illness/infection. if I notice something wrong I try to figure out if the fish is stressed and if so correct the problem that is causing the stress and fix that first. in most cases that seems to work. I personally feel that treating for diseases that you're not even sure if the fish has can cause more harm than good. for one thing most meds destroy bacterial colonies which may cause the tank to go through a mini-cycle so if meds aren't absolutely necessary then I wouldn't use them.

he is still a juvie and will probably start to grow out of his shyness as he gets just a little bigger. adding some other type of fish that will eagerly eat from the surface may help, just keep a close eye that your rd doesn't kill the other fish. a while back I added another couple of fish in my trimacs tank when he was very inactive and he livened up but is still a pretty finicky eater. you can try different things but just try to keep his stress to a minimum and that means no more banging on the glass. :p I also wouldn't do anymore redecorating for a while either.

Gorgeous Red Devil, do not get rid of him by any means.... One thing you may try is earthworms or waxworms, but I agree possibly adding some competition in there may help, how about some convicts almost as dithers....

tis simple...get rid of it...i bougfht a huge one and as soon as it started givin my jar the ****s, it was out! only thing was no aquarium would take it.. :(

I would agree with the person who mentioned dithers. I had some tinfoil barbs in with my midas and they really keep him active and eating. Once i took them out and put them in the 240 the midas got very shy. He never eats as much as he used to. And now he certainly won't come to the top.

 the assclown

Dithers could work, because they would give the fish a reason actively hunt food. But you have to accept the dithers will get shreded at some stage by the devil. and they probably will need replacing. but they may encourage him to become a bit more lively and aggressive.
he certainly doesnt look under nourished from the picture. i would just feed say five decent size pellets a day if its just him in the tank.
if you add tinfoils you going to need a lot of space they grow quick and are greedy!
all my tinfoils got murdered by the cichlids.. they grew from 2" to 6" in 2- 3 months.

Well my experience tells me Dithers don't work. They never have, and I honestly don't care to try them again. I appreciate the advice though. Again, my exp with solitary cichlids and dithers always ends up with them becoming dinner in the end. Then again, I'm sure that part of the reason also had to do with lack of territories for the dithers to hide as well.

And JeepsAndJeeps, I do apologise for snapping at you back there man. I'll admit I have a temper, and maybe it does get out of hand. Sorry about that bud.... It just upsets me when people make assumptions when they don't know the person, that is all.

As far as the darting. Try putting in some floating plants. He's afraid of the surface. That will give him a more secure feeling and it wont be so afraid of the surface.
Keep the lights off for feeding. And maybe get some more subdued lights for the tank.

If i have a fish that is pissing me off because it is so picky or thinks it's too afraid to eat, i wont feed it.

I'll feed the other fish if there are other fish in the tank. If it doesnt come to get the food, then it doesnt eat.
Simple.

If its the only fish in the tank, i will throw in some food once a week. I'll leave it in for them to get it, and if they dont, it comes out and they can wait another week to eat.

Thats pretty normal for a juvi RD to act the wat it has. Wait a few more inches and it should be more confident in its tank. If you want ditter fish try a bunch of smaller convicts, and make sure there are a bunch of hiding spots for convicts to retreat.
And for the splashing at night, its more likely cause from the evaporation of water droplets that are hanging from the top lid and most fish especially will try to attack it thinking its a bug or something hanging.
You need to be patient, I have several fishes in my community tank that wont touch anything except frozen krill/shrimp and to make sure that particular fish eats its share I used a stretch hanger and stick a shrimp/krill at the tip for it to eat it.
And dont worry about starving your fish they can survive for weeks or more without food. Still feed him floating pellets if you wanted to and removed uneaten foods withing 10 minutes, and turning the lights off during feeding will help a lot. Sooner or later he will eat those pellets.

Enjoy that fish its nice looking RD.;)
