I came home from work tonight to find about 40 Red Devil + Salvini fry being protected by the proud parents.

They are in a 1000ltr tank with Oscars, Flowerhorns & a large plec.

I knew they had laid eggs, as the Red Devil savaged me while cleaning the tank.

I would now like to grow on a few to see what they actualy turn out like. My question is - how? I have never bred Cichlids before.

How long will the parents look after them? I assume they will be feeding them. When should I move them to their own tank?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

when we gonna see pics we must see thats gonna be one sweet lookin baby or hybrid so let the pics roll we can wait

there is a good chance the parents could eat the fry but no guaruntee on that though. if they do continue to care for them it will probably be for about 5-6 weeks until they are ready to spawn again (assuming they remain paired up). at that point they'll stop caring for the fry and prepare for a new spawn. if you want to grow them up, then I'd remove them either as soon as they start disappearing or after 3-4 weeks. :)

I will try and get some photos tonight.

They seem to be caring for them quite well. The have made a terracotta strawberry pot their home. If any of the fry venture out of the pot, then the Red Devil gets them in his mouth and puts them back. It's amazing to watch.

sounds like they're going to be good parents from the get go. many times it can take a pair a spawn or 2 to get things right, but other pairs get things right the first time. if that's the case, then like I said before they should care for the fry for around 5-6 weeks. if you don't remove the fry by then the parents will leave them to spawn again and the other fish in the tank will eat them. :)

Sorry, these are the best I can do - never photographed fish before!

The fry are venturing further away from the pot, but the parents are protecting them very well.

They look like they'll care for the fry until the 5-6 week period until they decide to breed again.

Dont assume the parents will feed them, because they wont, you need to supply them with something to eat. Newly hatched brine shrimp, cyclops or something like that. Atleast additional feeding will make more fry survive...
