You can have a 40 gallon breeder tank hell have enough space to move but you can probably only have a single fish in the tank.

40 gallon breeder isn't enough for an adult Red Devil. Personally I'd go no smaller then a 90. Its not just about size of moving space but also about quality water conditions. I hate minimum sizes for fish. Be like trying to make yourself live in a closet.

+1, I'm not a fan of solo fish either, though I realise it is sometimes necessary.

I'm sure you could keep one alive for many years in a fairly small tank, but there are certainly better options. I'd hate to see any potentially-12" cichlid an anything will less than a 4x2' footprint, but thats just me.
