I have a 4 or 5 inch red devil in a 46 bow front and was wondering if you all know of any suitable tank mates for him. Cichlid and non cichlid suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you can think of any top dwellers that would be cool as well. preciate any suggestions you all can think of

With a tank that size, I do not think any tankmate can fare well with red devils if you consider their temperament.

Try asking in the SA/CA forums ;)

Also, RDs mostly hate anything that gets in their tank.

A. Labiatus aka Red Devil cichlids are very territorial and aggressive. Males can grow 10-12"+ and are brutally capable of destruction. IME, their level of aggression goes down as the size of their tank increases. And it works the opposite as the tank size decreases. I've seen a male RD that was kept in 55g tank who was practically insane with aggression....total glass banging mean a** SOB who later lost almost all his aggression by comparison after going into a 215g. My point is yours is going to be extremely aggressive in a 46g tank. Too small of a tank drives them crazy and he would kill anything you put in there. You should consider an upgrade to a 75 gallon imho. For a RD + tankmates, a 135-150+. GL

i have to second that. i had a breeding female devil in my 250g who even allowed my set of 2" convicts to live. albeit, crammed to one side of the tank

personally thats when my snapped and started murdering everything. if you want tankmates it i suggest a much bigger tank, 90gal and above.

All I can do is reiterate what balton said. I haven't seen a red devil that didn't want to kill everything in sight in such a small tank.

WOW thanks for all of the help everyone. All of the other forum sites i have been too really suck. I have a 90 gallon that i am trying to get up and running but need to find cheap gravel for (any suggestions) and so my plan is to put him in there but i was just wondering if anything would live in the 46 with him but i guess not huh.
