you might have problems finding tankmates even for a 90, but there are things that might work

WOW thanks for all of the help everyone. All of the other forum sites i have been too really suck. I have a 90 gallon that i am trying to get up and running but need to find cheap gravel for (any suggestions) and so my plan is to put him in there but i was just wondering if anything would live in the 46 with him but i guess not huh. I preciate all of the help yall are great.

The 90 will be a much better tank for him. Now you can probably experiement with tankmates. A pleco or catfish maybe? Convicts are very hardy and cunning, you might be able to add one. Arrange some driftwood so he can shuffle around to escape or hide when the RD is on the rampage.

I can add nothing about the RD or tankmates. Great advice thus far.

How about a sand substrate? Play sand or Silica sand is very cheap. 50lb bags are usually not much more than 5 bucks.

Every RD has it's own level of aggression and what it will or won't accept in it's tank. It will be a trial and error situation and you just have to try to enjoy the learning process. :) Once you get it right, you feel like you've accomplished something lol. Then again, it could be a single fish aquarium. They have plenty of personality to keep you entertained though.

Its been my experience that my Black shark and red devil get along spectacularly, there is NO agression whatsoever between them. Granted they usually put fourth a team effort to kill anything else I attempt to put in the tank with them that is over 8 inches long, and you will need a bigger tank as black sharks get even bigger than devils, but if you upgrade to say a 125g tank, BS's are GREAT tankmates for RD's!

I am thinking of adding a small red devil to my 300 gallon (96Lx30Wx24H) as my final fish. I already have:

1 Silver Aro (8")
5 Silver dollars (5")
2 Bala Sharks (7")
1 Jack Dempsey (5")
1 Firemouth (4")
1 Jellybean Parrot (4")
1 Spotted Spiny Eel (24")
1 Bichir Senegalus (8")
1 Common Pleco (8")

I figured that it would be wise to add a red devil as the last fish in the tank since it would be the most aggressive. My eel has his own hiding place which a red devil would not even be able to get into and my other cichlids have plenty of other hiding places and space in the aquarium. I kinda figured that my silver dollars and bala sharks would act as dither or target fish since they are extremely fast swimmers.

What does everyone think about this?

cr when it comes to devils it is really hit or miss. theres no real science to it. your fish will tolerate what it will and it wont what it wont. thats all there is to it, but in your 46 gal it probably wont tolerate anything. i had to move my 2-3" devils to my 90 with my 10" barred midas where the 4 of them get along great now. they were in a 55 with some other fish and they were starting to get aggro. 2-3" devils in a 55 aggro, how big is yours in a 46 gal? you see where im going here.

I wouldn't recommend addidng a RD to this mix, one day he/she could snap and kill all of your fish.

I would get something else like a Vieja Regani or a Green Terror or a Vieja Synspilum.
