Red Devil With Black Spots

how long have you been seeing these spots? is it wild caught? how many spots are there?

chances are if it's from petland, it's not wild caught.

i dont see how the sterilizer could have done anything as i have never seen any negative effects of it. if the spots are growing and changing color then it is some type of parisite, definitely not black ich.

Do the black spots look like a growth of some sort or does it appear to be developing some type of natural coloration pattern? It more than likly is a cross of Red Devil/Midas and could be just the natural coloration of the fish's pattern as is grows. Do you have any pictures?

He may be a fader. If so, more black may appear before he fades. I would not be over worried. If all else seems fine, just keep feeding him.

yes lots of juveniles go through a pattern /color change... and then fade to one color as the mature.. i see some with lots of black and i kind of wish they would stay that way... some really have unique patterns for awhile..and then poof it is gone...

Thanks everyone, I think it probably is just color, because it's not showing any signs of sickness. I'll update when I get a pic or if it starts getting sick.

Chances are if it is from Petland it isn't even a full red devil. Most likely it is a red devil / midas mix. Not necessarily a bad thing. I've had a petstore red devil for over 7 years now and it is my favorite fish.

Anyway, the black spots are nothing to worry about, just natural coloring that will most likely go away. Take a look at all of the black on mine.
