Well we've heard it all. First, they are all male,,, well we've proven that not to be. Then they said they are all infertile,,, well guess what,,, I've got wigglers!
I'm curious to see what will be next.

My pair has laid several batches of eggs but I've never been able to get them out of the tank and they've all been eaten, every time. This time I was able to get them out of the breeder tank.
None had gone bad after the first day so I thought I was good to go. Well at day 2 they started going bad. I was picking them off with tweezers but every time I turned around there was more.
I had pretty much written them off. This morning, day 4 all but a small handful had gone bad and I thought the Infertile theory was right on. I was about to get my Rainbow babies and put them in
the 10gl. the eggs are in, to grow them out. Well, with one more look, there they were,,, WIGGLERS!!!! Yes indeed, Red Dot Severum Wigglers! Here is a link to the first attempt.

One question though,,, will the fungus from the bad eggs kill the wigglers? What if anything should I do? I've already got some Maroxy in there. I tried to move the bad eggs but the wigglers being so sticky,, they move with them. ????

Interesting post and pictures. Your male needs better aim:D. That sure is a high percentage of non fertile ones, but you definately have a few that are going to hatch. Keep us posted with how they turn out.

I'm hoping it's just an immature male & it will improve with age?????

being that they are wiggling, haven't they already hatched?

I've always heard there was controversy over these fish, but never knew why. Are they hybridized?

Either way, congratulations, I'll be looking forward to seeing the wigglers mature.

Don't know for sure. I've heard several different theory's, it's hard to know what or who to believe. I've heard that they are hybrids. I've heard that they are hormonally altered for color. I've heard that they've been line bred for color, so much so it's messed them up, (like many dog breeds, too much inbreeding). I'd like to find out for sure myself. Keep in mind that mixing color morphs is not hybridizing. But I don't know for sure what kind of severums where used to get Red Dots.

Does anyone know "for sure" their origin? Not what you heard from a friend, who heard from a friend..... etc. Please,, I don't want to start another flame round, I would just like to find some facts.

way to turn theories into myths my friend.

I read that one of the original breeders said they were line bred from gold severums. This makes sense and I believe it to be true. Some of the gold males display a good amount of red. There's no reason to believe that you couldn't take golds with the most red and continue to line breed them to get red severums. Not exactly the hard evidence you want, but foreign fish breeders are pretty secretive with there breeding methods to get certain fish. There is nothing about them that makes me think hybrid and hormones would fade over time. Instead the red severums only get more intensely colored as they mature.
