Can I mix in a Red Ear Slider with my big SA/CA cichlids? My sister has been nagging me about getting a turtle but I am not sure if I can put them together. Also, don't I need to have a dry basking spot for it? I have kept turtles before and fed them shrimp pellets and fish food and they did alright. Is this the right diet for them?

Not usually , Yes and probibly not. Get a brand turtle food and water hyasynth (if you can get it)

Sliders are really coldwater, mine are kept at 75 and i certainly
wouldn't trust any of them with fish ;)

Yes they have to gave a dry basking spot as they will spend
most of the day on it, if they don't the shells will go bad and they
will get bacterial infections.Basking temps need to be in the low 90's
and they will also need a uv lamp.

IMO the only way you will figure out if the turtle is going to be okay with your fish is to try it. Most people say that turtles will eat any fish in a heart beat but I had a snapping turtle that wouldn't even touch a fish or anything live. As long as it is brought up on pellets I think it should be okay.

IMO I don't think it is to good of an envirement for a turtle. If you wan't one I would just do a turtle tank. Just my 2cents.

Basking spot=definatly, will likely suffer a slow and misearble demise with out
Diet=as varied as possible with good staple turtle pellets, fresh greens, some meet
Fish Compatable=might work might not turtles are omnivores and some day might start sampling fish.

Other problems=turtles crap a great deal when well cared for so it'll add much to your bioload....
Also basking spot may raise water temps to dangerous (for the fish) levels

sliders are not coldwater

they need warm water, between 75-82 is good.

sliders are very suseptable to respiratory infection so its a good idea to keep there environment at proper temps, air temp should be warm (and humid) as well

TEMPERATURE RANGE (°F)

Air Temperature: mid 70's - 80's

Basking Temperature: High 80's to low 90's

Water Temperature: ~ 72 to 76 degrees for sub-adults & adults, 78 to 80 degrees for hatchlings & smaller juveniles.

Sorry to dissagree:D

Most times the basking light in my RES tanks ends up raising the water temp up to nearly 80 even when i dont want it too.

I think the main problem with higher water temps for turtles is bacteria from uneated food and waste breaking down rapidly and stress from not being able to cool down as readily if they reach above optimum temperatures.

When it gets super hot in the apartment i keep the turtles in a clean tub in the bath room and change the water if it gets too warm (apartment people probably regret payin for the water going to my place :D). Easiest to clean RES tank i've ever had....taught me that when i get my own place i want running water going to the turtles so i'll change the water at least every other day if not daily :).

I noticed in your sig DiscusMel that you have a Suwanee River Cooter...that is a gorgeous species of cooter. Then again i'm partial to snapping turtles and Cooters...
