audobon field guide lists them in the mississippi valley from illinois to the gulf, they are obviously in many more places now, even other continents, due to irresponsible owners releasing pets.
I might be wrong, but I think Red Eared Sliders are now in the wild of every continent besides Antarctica.

And about the legalities of turtles under 4": I think it is more about children not buying small turtles. As a young adult, most places will sell me a 2" turtle with no fuss. But if a young child were to say I want that turtle, they probally wouldn't sell it. The reason we can't buy turtles under 4" is that someone thinks kids put turtles in their mouths and a 5" turtle will obviously not fit :screwy: .

And saying the sign on the tank stating "for scientific use only" doesn't get them of the hook? It doesn't incriminate them. All they have to do is say no.

if they dont enforce the sign it is like they dont have it and therefore they are still breaking the law, i asked an animal law authority about that and they said it didnt get them off the hook at all. most stores wont sell kids anything, not just exclude turtles. and i mentioned other continents. i know you and i could go get turtles under 4", but we shouldnt be able to according to the law, that is my point, by law no turtle under 4" is supposed to be sold in the U.S. as a pet. its not an argument or my opinion, its not arguable, its just the law. i just thought you guys might appreciate knowing the law and the details of it. i hear a lot of confusion about whether it is in the entire U.S., or just red ear sliders, or just water turtles, so i thought i might share what i found out when i looked into it.

red ear sliders are very common and not at all the rare. just go to like a local pet store
