Red eared slider problem!

my school just got a young RES, probably about 3.5" shell length. He has red inflammation around his eyes, and his neck seems to have lots of swollen, loose skin all around it, almost like a fat roll. but its obviously not a fat roll. the turtles shell seems to have some white fuzzy stuff growing on it. I dont have pics yet, but can anyone determine whats causing this and how it can be cured? again, the school got it like this.

It sounds like it has an infection of some kind. The white fuzzy stuff is a fungus that if it gets worse you should look for a cure at your LFS, although if you clean the water it should go away. Something that works for fish inflamation that i'm not sure about turtles is adding salt to the water (non-iodized!). For fish I use 1tsp/gal. Good luck.

The white spots on the shell may be fungus problems, check the watet quality and if the turtle have a basking zone where can get direct sunlight and dry complitly.

The other problems should be because of a poor nutrition and bad water conditions...


But i need to see the pictures 1st.
Take the turtle to veterinarian if possible.

I have seen the white puffy eyes happen with turtles that are not exposed to proper lighting. Do you have UVA and UVB bulbs and an adequate sized enclosure and basking area for him? WE need more info. Pictures of him and the set up would be best.

will do, thought the setup is pitiful and probably looked much worse when the previous owner had him.
erm... its in a 10gal and the best my school can do for it is a 20gal, so i guess we can try to rehome it after a while. as much as i like my science teachers and theyre cool people, they dont wanna spend their own money on something for the school, which is why we have a goldfish in a 10gal as well.

so, yes, I'll get you pics of the setup. I may be able to upload them during school tomorrow as I have a study hall and a science teacher is my proctor.

Poor turtle is getting the shaft everywhere it goes. I'd hazard that is the fate of most red ears, except for the ones the orientals make into soup.

i hear that... i told the teachers it deserves a 125gal but obviously the school wont pay for that.

on the upside, the infection didn't look as bad today. couldnt get pics as i forgot my camera :/
