Get both, they are good for different applications.

how are they different?? which one will be better for summer bass fishing? for 1lb to 4lb bass?

I rarely throw any hard baits but here it goes. Crank baits are generally used to "stump bumping." You throw them and bump them off of the bottom and as they float up after hitting an object (and you stop your retrieve) that is when the fish will usually hit it.

Rattle baits are usually used in more open/deeper water were bass are suspended such as fish suspended at the thermocline during the summer or in open water chasing shad.

There is no, "one is better then the other" here.

If you are a beginner and doing summer fishing from the bank, I would suggest buzzbaits in the morning/evenings and some sort of soft plastic bait jerk/swim bait during the day like a Yamamoto senko, trick worm (bubblegum), or Yum money minnow.

thanks for the reply. i was wondering since you don't usually use hardbaits what do you usually use during the summer?? do you think that chatterbait will work too??

I use mostly soft plastics and top water, year round.

The chatterbait is a good easy lure to use. Nothing beats a properly fished soft plastic though IMO.

Down in Alabama in the middle of summer we fish with giant 12-15" soft plastic worms. The bass love them for some reason. Even though they are big you will still manage to catch a 10" bass on it!
