Red Festae Spawn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In my experience, if they eggs do not hatch, or if they are infertile, your female will be due for an *ss kicking. Males seem the most violent when spawns go bad, or when mama just aint in the mood. As previously mentioned above, having a pair in a tank with other cichlids seems to divert their aggressive tendancies away from each other. I also have also kept many a female alive by using a flowerpots in which only she can fit. I once kept a large pair in a 40 long for 2 years with no issues of aggression. They spawned 3 times for me and each spawn hatched. I also paired a F0 male with my friends F1 female in his 110g which also contained a pair of Synspillums. They lived in complete harmony for at least 1.5 yrs. The Festae pair spawned twice. 1st spawn eggs didn't hatch, and he promptly punished her mercilessly. 2nd spawn fungussed and he decided she was no longer fit to bare his seed. So he prepared her for burial. My friend sadly called and asked me to come get him.

Yes they are in a community tank with 4 silver dollars (not exactly sure what type) two very small convicts who live in the opposite corner in a ozette sword plant and a couple of small spotted rafs who live in the driftwood. I just got back and noticed the fry were in a "cave" the female made for the young to go after they hatched. Both the male and female have been taking turns keeping a watchful eye on them.

When will the fry come out from the "cave?"

And when is a good time to remove the fry and which way has proven to be the best to do so?
