Here's my female P. loisellei with red on the fins, similar to yours. Also note the faded band below the dorsal fin.

So what should I expect from her in terms of growth rate, full size, temperament etc? Have we concluded that this is a female? I know I could look all this stuff up, and I have. But every web site gives the same generic talking points. I would love to hear from actual experienced keepers. Thanks.

They are fast growers and up to 12". They aren't too aggressive. Mine only chases and never harms any other fish. You can tell mine is a male w/ the black pattern on the body. They are great and have a lot of personality.

My experience is similar to cichlidfish's. I have a 5" female loisellei in a mixed CA tank (210 gal) of similarly sized and slightly smaller fish. She is in charge, but not overly aggressive. Occasionally she'll nip and chase, but the harassment is minimal. Usually coincides with feeding time. Growth rate has been pretty fast (2" over the last 3-4 months). She has a specific hiding place among the rocks that she guards and retreats to in the evening.

Ian

Yours is really nice BTW.

OP-tank size will make the difference with aggression. Mine is in a 150g and he runs the tank for the most part, but I have a large syn and JD that go after my loisellie. The JD isn't so bad, but the syn makes me worry a little. Luckily the loisellie is much quicker then the fat syn :D
