That depends on you as an aquarist. If you have a large aquarium (180 gallons minimum, though larger is preferred), want a highly interactive fish, and don't mind having to give it a bit more special care than the typical fish you see in a store like Petsmart, then yes, there is arguably no better choice than a fire eel (or its close cousin, the tire track eel).
Just make sure if you get one you have a tight lid eith no holes... They are true escape artist... My old one jumped out twice where the intake tubes go in the tank and the 2nd time i didnt notice till morning
no underground filter either, and you are making a comitment for a long term pet like a parrot or macaw they live forever, and have personallities, they can be hand trained and very friendly, extremly entertaining and suprisingly intelligent
They are great fish! Mine are only 12" or so and already are very interactive. They have been hand feeding for quite a while now. When I feed with my turkey baster they put there mouths in the exit of it. They always come out when i walk up. I love em!
