Red-footed tortoise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Richard Fife, one of the best tortoise breeders in the country, produces them in AZ I believe! He also gets really smooth growth! I think you just have to really mist the enclosure quite frequently to keep the humidity up.

I trust it would be hard to properly house a redfoot outdoors year round in Arizona. They should ideally have high humidity. The southeast is a different story.

I guess I should add that I seriously doubt he keeps them outdoors year round and might actually keep them indoors most of the year! I'll have to ask him.

i honestly didnt read through this whole thing but my reds will eat guava and papaya over anything else in there enclosure...i definately regulate there sweet intake to greens to protein and think that is a wise choice.

would they be able to live in an outdoor enclosure year round in texas (clear creek) we are not very far from the coast

I am proud to report that Rosebud has been re-homed with Arizona Tortoise Compound. Check out the facilities at their website or FB page. I feel good knowing that she will be able to roam around, dig in the dirt, and bask in the pond. When the time comes, she will have a chance at motherhood! Here is the last picture I took of her:

you must stay around me i live in clear lake but i think they would

I go to drill at Ellington Field monthly and use to be stationed there full time so I am pretty familiar with Clear Lake.....what type of set ups do you keep?

I have one of these that's been neglected. It was my 12 year old step brothers first pet and he has treated it like crap. he doesn't live with us but he just sends the tortoise to us every now and then when hes "bored" with it. It has a relatively bumpy shell and doesn't look like he even keeps it with a basking lamp of any kind, only a heater. I have the 5-6" turtle currently in a 20 long that my bearded dragon used to grow out in. so far the tortoise is getting lots of care, regular misting and water changing. I feed her greens and veggies every day. she absolutely loves tomatoes. I get her out regularly to explore in the garden or around the house and she seems to be doing wonderful now that I have taken care of her.

they are a really cool and personal species to keep. but I had a Hermanns tortoise a few years ago that gave all the same characteristics without the expensive price tag or extra care that a redfoot needs. they aren't the easiest to care for so if you want an easy tortoise then you should get a Hermanns, russian or greek tortoise.

I don't know what the future holds for my tortoise but I would rather see it go to a home where she could be treated how she deserves with a large encolusure. I know that some people are really seeking out these turtles so I feel like they deserve it more than me.
