No need to do the iodine if gonna do meds.

I would just leave the filter out and keep the bubbler. Do manual water changes. That should be enough to keep the water clean with that small of a tank.

Thanks; as it's been a week, I take it I should go ahead and do this , as it doesn't seem likely that he's going to recover? Seems better to start now while he's eating? Also, I've read that I can set up a 10 gal hospital tank by taking 10 gal of my tank's water, and some of the sand, and a little bit of the biological media, adding a filter and bubbler, and put him in it? I didn't add iodine, I was nervous about taking him out, should I do that now?
You don't need the sand for QT. Bare-bottom with some fake plants for hiding (heater and filter) is all that you need.

I set him up last night in a 10 gal with water and rock and plant from main tank and heater and bubbler, and gave him the first dose of Maracyn 2. He seemed okay this morning, not happy about being there but hanging in there. It will be quiet all day today. Maracyn goes for another few days. I should change some water in a couple days? Do fish ever eat in a hospital tank or are they too stressed? I’ll update.

Update. He’s had 5 days of treatment, double dose day one then 4 single doses. Been monitoring water, everything stayed zero, and just changed 30%. Red growth still there but might be better, it’s hard to say, the light is different in this tank. He seems fine. Only fed him a couple times and he only had a few bites, but it could be more the new small tank than feeling bad. Because the growth isn’t completely gone should I keep him here and do another course of treatment? Or put him back? Thank you, the advice has been helpful.

It kind of looks better from the first pic. Would retreat and then move back to the main tank.

I put him back last night and in the big tank I can see that this growth is certainly still there, although maybe less red than at the beginning, so maybe it got knocked down by the Marcyn 2 and he’ll fight it off himself now. It’s been about a month though, do others have experience with infections hanging around so long? But he’s acting fine, swimming around, very hungry. I guess I’ll monitor it and try something else - any suggestions, maybe Furan 2? - in week or so if he’s getting worse? I did read that minocyclin doesn’t work if the pH is too high, my kit reads about 8, although the meter the guy used at the fish store said 7.5. All the other fish seem fine.
