While David is right, I'm going to argue the point by putting forward the notion that if you're going to keep a certain type of fish that has taken your fancy, why not develop the tank to suit their needs? Eartheaters are infinitely more interesting when kept in properly structured shoals on a sand substrate when they sift in a pack turning over huge amounts of sand in search of food. It should be a given obligation that when keeping Eartheaters, you have sand, just like you need to keep them in water.

I agree with that 100%, my point was just that "need" is a very strong word. They they don't need sand like they need water, although without it you're not going to see the behaviour that makes them interesting.

Japes have you sold your group of orange heads?

you theoretically could, however they need a tank with a nice footprint which for 2...40 would be ok...but, they do much better(i'm told) in groups of at least 5

if you really want to do a 40, try gymnogeophagus maybe some paso pache species. the gymno's don't grow quite as large
