Red Head Tapajos Log

Since the last post, that same pair has had a spawn each month. Unfortunately, each time they spawned, they would always eat the eggs. This past week, we decided to divide the pair from the rest of the comm to see if they'll feel more secure and have a successful spawn. day 1 - eggs laid and fertilized. day 3 - little eyeballs could be seen on the eggs and the parents proceeded to collect eggs in mouth. day 5 - now have wigglers with attached yolk sacs. the parents will spit them into little craters in the sand and recollect them. I'm anticipating free swimmers in another few days and will feed fry with crushed flakes, hikari first bites, and baby brine shrimp.

QUESTION : Now that I have free swimming fry, how do I go about feeding them? At this point they are swimming around an inch above the substrate but I'm thinking if i crush up some pellets, will they be able to swim to the top to get them orr do I have to feed some sort of sinking food?

first picture reminds me when my 5 RHT came. kinda shocked about their sizes that day. well..it was almost a year ago. they turn out beautifully now..almost 12cm.

Yours seem so healthy..nice color an the head. market shrimp eh? maybe I could follow the staples u give them.

Alright long time since the last update. I guess 4th times the charm we have viable free swimmers! Now I want to separate the fry into their own tank. Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Set up a the separate tank with water from the main tank. Then, right after lights on, when they are still huddled together at the bottom you could gently use a turkey baster to suck them up and transfer them over.

Last night I got up to get some water and when I passed the tank I noticed that the fry were hovering close to the divider I had put in the tank. Upon closer inspection, I saw a small group slowly slide through the small slit at the edge of the divider and make their way to the other side! I had no choice but to take some tubing and siphon whoever I could before they were eaten. I lost atleast 5 to roselines and maybe a few more to other red heads or discus, but managed to safely transfer the rest that wandered over. At this point the parents decided they'd gather up the rest on their side and hold them in their mouths. I took the plunge and netted the parents into the fry tank. I was hesitant because I thought maybe they'd swallow or spit the fry out in the net and smash them while they trashed about. Luckily I think I managed to save ~40 count but it definitely seems to be much less than what I saw in the main tank. Funny thing is when they were in the main tank, the male always held the fry. Now, in the fry tank it is the female that always holds the fry. Oh well, we'll see how this pans out and I'll get some new photos posted soon.
