JK47 JK47 one other thing I keep noticing is the mid-body spot that seems to be much more present. Maybe that's a juvie thing? Not sure. Also, do you think it could have to do with water conditions?

Water quality, stress factors and diet can have a huge impact on coloration/appearance of most species. Orange heads are certainly part of that group. I don't think in your case it is water quality though. They just look identical to the ones I have seen as of late here locally.

Well, they are starting to get fairly chunky. I'll see what they turn out to be. I can say that they act just like every other geophagus I've ever kept. Nippy, hungry, and constantly digging pits.

The first picture is a picture of an orange head shortly i brought him home in april from the local fish store... about 3 inches maybe. No color what so ever, but his tail already had the adult stripping on it. The next two are pics from july of the same fish. Still not as bright as the rest of the group and he definitely started developing it at a more mature age than the rest of them too which came from a different source. My group is 2m3f and all the females take turns laying eggs with the other male but no love falls over to the male pictured. I am wondering if it is a different fish.

outsider1911 outsider1911 , how are you sexing your fish? Yours look very similar to mine. Very light orange on the head with a darker spot on the side.

the females have all taken turns spawning with my one male. And for me the females seem to be a little smaller, at the age their at now at least, and have a lot smaller extensions off the dorsal and tail fin. So based out the fins and size i am assuming it's a male that i posted a picture of. Also he goes head to head with my guarenteed male which i believe is also a sign he's a male.
