What is the best way to start a tank for a pair of Jewels?

1. Get 3-4 to form a pair?
2. Try to pick 1 male 1 female and put them together?

Tank is 30 long 36 inches long x 12 inches across

I have read that sex can be determined by looking for a circular pattern of speckles on the caudal fin (male) and that the males dorsal is also more pointed. Is there a more accurate method to sex them?

Tank is established (running for 2 years) but my GBR's have passed on except for 1 and a couple rummy nosed tetras. PH is a little higher than required too, but can be adjusted before I get any fish. its around 8-8.1 right now.
Thanks

what i seen in those videos are not jewels. Igot three of them they look like dempseys

OMG

Thats a 90 gallon tank... And theres 1 JD 1 GT and 1 Firemouth, there was also a Salvini in there

I was asking about the 30 gallon. I prefer to read and get a plan together first instead of "impulse buy." I'm trying to figure out how to set up a 30 gallon tank for them (Jewels)...sorry for confusing you

Anyone else have ideas/opinions?

Thanks

In general getting 6 of any pair forming fish and letting them pair off themselves is the way to go.jewels can be nasty be prepared to remove the extras after a pair forms or the fish will do it for you.I used to breed them in a 20long awesome colorful fish!

mmm so far my only experience with them was two in a 55 I had along with CA cichlids and they breed once and then died :( I would say the water temp was about 78 and the ph was a little over 7. I don't think they are hard to breed if I did it back then(this was when I a total noob at fishkeeping) They are difficult to sex though so your best bet would be to get several of them and see if two pair off. Males are Generally bigger but when Juvies who knows. With the extra ones you can put them in your 90. As long as your other fish aren't way to big they will be able to handle themselves around bigger New worlds.

OK so go with 5-6 to establish a pair....sounds good.

I'd prefer not to add them to my SA/CA community as they are all set for now and doing very well.

I will have to keep a close eye on the jewels though IMO. So should I get them all on a friday or something so I can watch them throughout the weekend? Or will it take longer to establish a pair?

Would just hate to buy 6 and have them pair up while I'm at work all day and kill off the others.

What do you think?:nilly::popcorn:

ok so I'm reading this as...treat them as most other africans meaning they can be overstocked to spread agression until I can identify a mated pair? That will work out well for me but I just want to be sure i have read your advice correctly..

thanks ammerman19
