I just purchased a Red Line Severum. Can someone fill me in on these guys? I have heard of Red Neck or Rokt. Severums but not Red Line. Anyone have any pics of Red Line Severums?? Info on the web seems to be very limited.

What does it look like? Trade names are confusing because anyone can call a fish anything they'd like and sell it. Red line severums could refer to Atabapos, severus, or even golds or super reds. Post a picture of the fish and we may be able to tell you what you have.

As for things like behavior and care, I treat all of mine the same way. Good, clean water, temp in the low to mid 80s, diet consisting of a good pellet food as a staple with snacks and treats of frozen and freeze-dried stuff (you can also give them veggies like romaine lettuce, which mine seem to enjoy), and tankmates like acaras, Geophagus, and other peaceful to mildly aggressive SA cichlids.

Well I ordered it from Live Fish Direct and they labeled it a Red Line Severum. It is still pretty small so it is hard to tell. Here's a quick video of it.

Hmmm. At this point it looks like a green severum, H. efasciatus. The problem is that most severums look the same when they're young. It could turn out to be a rotkeil/red neck/red head severum when it gets bigger. They don't usually start to show color until about 3 - 4".

If you look at Live Fish Direct, they list all severums as Heros severus, which is incorrect. They also do not supply pictures for the "red line severum." So they're probably not going to be much use.

I got these at a LFS and they called them Red Streak Gold Severums. After 4 months they are just starting to show colorP1011352.JPGP1011352.JPG

What are they really?

They are gold severums. There are varying qualities of gold severum. Some are really pale white/yellow with no red, some get very orange with males having red lines throughout the face and body. It's impossible to say at a young size how they'll end up. I've had every shade of yellow/gold/orange/beige you could imagine in the ones I've grown out over the years. Here's how my most recent male ended up:

Compare that to a super red, which is basically a line-bred version of a gold that's bred for darker color (the super red is on the far left and the gold is on the bottom):
