Take a printout of a page from cichlids.com or any other website...I had the exact problem too, so I educate them, "Mota, is short for Motaguensis...and named after the Motagua River in Guatemala." Adding on to further flex your knowledge, "The Jaguar cichlid is from Managua, capitol of Nicaragua, that's why they call it Managuensis."

Yeah when Im at the LFS pronouncing names ending in an " I " sound, everyone is like, HUH? So I just teach them a bit of knowledge again..."It's Sal-vin-eye, thats why ecoli is Ee-kol-eye, also another word is stimuli."

Festae, however, is either way..."Fes-tay" or "Fes-thee" like Vertabrae and Algae

I always figured since they were from CA they were pronounced with Spanish letter: manah-gwen-say = managuense, motah-gwen-say = motaguense, so I don't get why salvini would be sal-veen-eye, and not sal-veen-ee

I think because Salvinis aren't named after a place but a scientist who's last name was "latinized", if thats a word lol, resulting in the EYE ending. Just my thoughts though.

Exactly, it is because you put it between the quotes "" Lol.

"Latinized" so that it could be globally accepted. Imagine if we had to pronounce all the diff. names of wildlife in their respective local native tongue...Spanish is easy for most of us, but think of say, Chinese...or Aborigine.

...and the Answer to your question has been answered already...Latin (and I don't mean Hispanics) not English. ..."It's Sal-vin-eye, thats why ecoli is Ee-kol-eye, also another word is stimuli."
