Hey was in the fish section at the local asian supermarket and saw these... I was like wow, what a waste of a nice Red Texas... They were labeled as Red Nilotica. Anybody ever heard of these? They looked like good eating :)

ya I eat tilapia all the time, it's good fried or grilled. I was wondering if this is a red texas or if it is some red kind of tilapia.

The mouth looks wrong for a red texas.

Isnt that what Nilotica means? Tilapia?

Here....

Hi!

They are a hybrid cross that started with T. Mossambica. The guy at cherrysnapper.com has selective breeding'd a couple of different strains, including a line with this brilliant orange color.

I would love to have a breeder colony of his pennyfish for our aquaculture venture, but I need the $ for tanks and permits.

Right now I'm growing Hybrid Nile/aurea.

The same page also shows some pretty Jamaican reds. I think those would sell really well if the color was a little darker.

Good read. That guy lives about 2 hours north of me. The butterballs are my favorite.
