  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmm maybe a sign of stress or a change in the tank. Any new tank mates recently? The only red on my JD is the top of the fin

ya, it is part of their color scheme. Red is good as long as it doesn't look like something besides color.....abrasions, sores, blood, fuzzy, nothing like that.

You consider thee color wheel and how you add colors together to make other colors.....JD already have almost every color on the wheel - why not red? They already have all the chromatophores needed to make red. So then, red it is.

There are different location variants of JDs with many different color variations. Some with different colors than others only a few miles down the road, in places like the Yucatan cenotes. The isolation of 1 population from another often selects for slight color differences depending upon female mate selection and preference, surrounding vegetation, or topography that would make a certain color better suited for survival in that place.
I remember back in the 80s, Don Conkel had found and imported individuals of a population with striking bright crimson red on the chest, yours may be an altered remnant of that population, that generations aquarium breeding over time has changed slightly.
