lol well I like them best too but I still like these. I dont seem to see either one for sale much though around CA

there are alot of members in cali have you looked in the classifieds section here? im sure there is someone near you that breeds rotties

The only comment I'll make is that short-bodied ones seem fairly common based on the reds I've kept and the pictures of reds I've seen online. I believe this to be a genetic issue that's probably been heavily influenced by the line breeding. Some people like short-bodied fish, but I personally don't care for them. I also lost my shorter-bodied one to bloat. Sometimes fish who are short-bodied have issues with that.

My remaining red sev is about two and a half years old and 9" or so. It's one of my favorite fish.

I wondered for a long time if these fish were just hormoned gold severums. Discus are color-fed and hormoned to bring out their intense red color at an early age so that they'll sell better; there was always the possibility that the same techniques were being used to create "red" severums. I've had my red for over two years and he's still a deep, bright orange. I do not color-feed. This leads me to believe it's truly genetic, as hormones and dyes fade with time.

There are also many places you can buy from if you're willing to get them shipped.
Yeah I know, Ive been looking, but afraid a bit to have them shipped from too far. I haven't done it before but if you guys think it usually works out ok then I might try it. As far as online in cali not much available right now.

yeah i was kind of wary about shipping the first time i ordered fish but i have done it several times now (i think 4 or 5) and have not had a single DOA or anything like that, as long as you order from somebody who knows what they are doing then the fish should arrive in good shape, the cost of shipping just sucks though but if you know anyone else who is into fish then you can order together and split shipping, thats usually what i do. but yeah i think rapps actually has some medium sized rotkeils available right now

they are a little fragile when vendor bring them in at a small small size. I've been told that before they export them, they are dyed to get even redder therefore causing more stress to them once lfs get them in. After a few week in the lfs tank, the ones that are alive and doing well are the stronger ones and they'll be fine.
