This it the one of the few breedings I have yet to accomplish. It takes alot of patience I am tring the divider method now. Vieja are real skittish fish and they have to be totaly stress free conditions to breed. I have gotten Prq to breed but pure vieja is a pain in the ***.

I know this sounds silly, but try wrapping the tank in a sheet. The fish don't see all the traffic around the tank and it puts them at ease. I've done this for a couple different skittish females and it worked great.

Wow sounds good. My bro keeps all his FH and Vieja in garage, now he built an outside shed for them...No Traffic and he has Vieja mix with KKP.

other vieja. Here is my big twelve inch male. his name is george.

He likes blood parrots but is much too agressive for them, he scares the hell out of them with his affections. I have seen pics of this cross though and it is gorgeous.
Vieja though are notoriously hard to pair.
I have tried him with midas and flowerhorn females (zz).
This does not work.
When you pair a vieja with amphilophus (such as zz fh)
the genotype of the body shape combines to form the shape of a blood parrot (this is how they are made)
so a vieja crossed with a zz flowerhorn yields something like a kirin parrot (only prettier if its hartwegi)
vieja crossed with blood parrot yields a rainbow king.
but you will have no luck unless you are very good at conditioning and breeding them
or if you have a veeerrry large tank (200+ gallons). Vieja are much more muscular and fast than flowerhorn cichlids and amphilophus cichlids. Males particularly have a tendancy to spar. My hand is covered in bloody cuts right now from playing the circle game with him.

Is yours a female?
I do have a male if you are close to oklahoma.

Incedentally, vieja hartwegi is on the ICUN red list, which makes them illegal to transport. This is why the ones you'll get are most likeley hybrids, and this is why they are called things like "gus red spot pranburi" and "vieja midori". The ones you can buy on aquabid are usually hybridized with fenestratum, zonatum and the like, so you're not breaking the law by having one : ).

PM me if you have any more questions about rainbow viejas. Ive had george for years so I can probably help.
Try to feed yours broccoli... they are omnivorous and eat lots of vegetables.

they are very uncomfortable in the conditions people usually keep flowerhorns in. I keep mine with hundreds of little convict cichlids that make him feel more secure. Lots of rocks and wood and caves to hide in..

this species lays their eggs on vertical facing rocks, well covered. They are very comfortable in planted tanks until they eat all the plants.
Keeping a vieja like this in a typical flowerhorn breeding tank will stress the hell out of them, and just make them angry at you

I would advise a more natural setting.

I have tried the divider method to no avail, given how picky they are choosing their mates.
If i had the money, I would have him in a very large (200+) tank with
lots of female flowerhorn that are similar in colour. Colour and body shape ime are the main things that fish go by when choosing a mate. For example, a texas is more likley to pair with a dempsey than with a midas, and an orange midas more likley to pair with an orange blood parrot than a yellow one. Fish are very superficial in this way.
Vieja are also very competitive, so make sure your females are in TOP condition and VERY muscular.
One bite from a big male vieja can take a chunk out of the side of a flowerhorn bigger than your thumb. Ive seen it happen. they are hella strong. A midas twice the size of a hartwegi can be killed by one easily.
