Red Tail Barracuda DEAD after water change?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not convinced Characins are sensitive to big water changes. When I had my 8" VATF in a 30g I would change 90% of the water every week and he would be fine. I would drain so much water that the bottom of his tail would rub on the gravel and wear out the tip. You can see his picture on my avatar. Sometimes I would not pay attention to the incoming water and it could have been 8-10 deg difference than the tank water and he never got ick or ill affects. Also I remember when I traded him in to the LFS he never floated the bag and just plopped him in the tank. The bag water probably was around 75 and the tank water was around low 80's. I was a little surprised and asked him why he didn't float it. He replied it's fine they're pretty tough.

Your Oscar didn't show any affects because they're pretty resilient as well. They can tolerate bad water conditions and temp swings more than other types of fish.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer why your cuda died but I don't think it was from a big water change.

Thanks I appreciate the info, some of my fish when bigger I don't do the float method as well since I do have smaller tanks too. Usually after a certain size I'm more confident in their ability to adapt to New water surrounding. I think it was probably a combo of incoming waters ph and temp with the amount of water taken out as well. Don't think ill be getting another one since he was on live guppies only lol.
