got a red tail today, about 2 - 3 inches, for 17$!

Got em from the same place that tells me a 125 is okay for a damned Red tail catfish for life, so there estimate that a 30 ga is good for life for this RTB is questionable haha, what do you guys think?

Also any other hints n tips to make him happier are greatly appreciated (diet, water params, flow etc)

He will be going in a tank with an ornate bichir and rainbow hi fin wolf fish once he about doubles in size. Have him in my 40 ga breeder, think he could get to 6 inches in there?

Can you get some pics? I've seen multiple fish called a "red tail barracuda", so size and tank requirements would depend on what exact fish you brought home.

What most would consider a red tail barracuda would be an acestrorhyncus falcatus, which can grow close to a foot long and needs wayyyy more than a 30 gallon for life.

Yep I'm at work right now, it'll be going into a 70 (when its big enough to not be eaten) and I'm upgrading my predator tank to something around 125 in a couple months so at least 125 ga will be his home when he is big enough to not be eaten.

That's why I post on here lol LFS shopkeeps really don't have much info on many of their fish like this. All it said was red tail barracuda, it was in a 15 ga alone (last one, hence why I snatched it up before asking on here).

I tried to id it myself but didn't have much time after acclimating it and getting it into the tank before work, I'm having my sister and my buddy check in on him at different points to make sure he's doing good (this LFS is infamous for having fish w/ disease)

Don't bash this LFS too hard though, they may be misinformed on the stock but its owned by a father son team and the father has parkinsons really badly so I cut these guys a lot of slack when it comes to this kind of thing. Me and his son, who's around 40, have gotten to be kinda friends so I'm thinking of basically volunteering to help clean tanks, find and treat sick fish etc.

What other specie of barracuda would be called red tailed? This guy almost looks like a cross between the falcirostris and falcatus, his body looks like the latter but the tail still has a red spot on it but no red on the upper dorsal or pectoral like most young falcatus I've seen

I do fear he is already a stunted one though, all the pics of juveniles I've seen have a smooth snout, unlike the adults w/ the kind of hog nose, that bump on the end of the snout, he already has a pronounced bump there but none of the other young red tails I've seen in my research today has had them

Still at work, will be out in a couple hours and will snap some pics n update! I do know enough that its for sure not payara haha that would be a funny thing to see at this guys shop. I have seen them for sale at other places around here called saber tooth barracuda (payara that is not my fish). It is for sure a member of whatever family Falcatus belongs too, same general body/fin/head shape just is colored differently then any others I've seen
